Profits in the Stock Market is more of a course in chart reading and stock trading, it comes with nearly 40 historical charts to refer to. We believe that Mr. Gartley and Mr. Gann may have known each other and although the chart reading and interpretation techniques within this book are different than what Mr. Gann teaches, there are moments of similarity that may help unlock some of Mr. Gann's teachings. Still, this book stands on it's own as one of the greatest chart reading and interpreting masterpieces of all time. Techniques taught can be applied to commodities. Due to the size of this book, including the large package of charts that come with it, this book should really be considered a course on chart reading.

Before being republished in 1981, copies of this 1935 classic were selling for $1800. Now the same text and very large package of accompanying charts are available again. In fact, the chart package alone is worth many times the cost of the book. This is one of the classic books written on the art of chart reading, chart interpretation and stock trading.

The fundamentals Mr. Gartley explains are as valid today as when they were formulated. Plus, the techniques taught can be applied to commodities trading, with some slight modification. Mandatory Classic

This is one of the best books I have ever read about technical analysis. Although the charts aren't what you would call 'contemporary' (the 30s and back) the wisdom in it still lives today.
It's a Complete Course, which used to be sold by chapters, but now, bound in a single book you'll be able to read all there is to it. The law of supply and demand hasn't changed that much ever since, just the participants in the markets.
With all the knowledge within the book you'll get a series of accompaning charts to help you in your study that show in a nostalgic, although informative way, how to build a trend following system. The trading style devised will be greatly appreciated by everyone who knows the virtues of patience on trading - waiting for the ideal timing with high probability of sucess.
Buy this one and you're trading is almost guaranteed to improve.

Technical analysis classic!

Harold McKinley Gartley had a stock market advisory service in the mid-1930s that had a large public following. This service was one of the first to apply "scientific" methods and research to resolution of the stock market problems: 1)what to buy; and 2) when to buy. This correspondence course is a summarization of Gartley's findings through 1936. The original course was issued looseleaf, in a green, three-ring binder. Lambert-Gann, Inc. has reissued this course in a more convenient book-format along with a separate package of oversized charts for easy reference against the textual explanations.

Gartley covers, in great depth, the Dow theory, market movements, bar charting, figure charting, volume of trading, price formations, relative strength, moving averages, oscillators, and breadth measuremants. He presents copious references to indicate from where he got his material and numerous footnotes for text clarification or expansion. There is very little that one finds in the literature of technical analysis today that was not covered in Gartley's work. The book is well-researched and well-written. Unfortunately, Gartley's idea of "scientific" study is somewhat primitive as measured against today's standards. His approach was more rational-intuitive than statistical. (A good example of the methods he employed can be found in Gartley's "Stock Market Probability Tables" published by the author in 1940.)

While I feel that this is the best and most complete work on technical analysis ever compiled, the lack of apparent progress over the past seventy years in the theoretical underpinnings of the technical analysis field seems to cast a shadow of doubt over its basic methodology. Personally, I have never found much use in the Dow Theory (subjective and late signals); price patterns (one tends to see what one wants to see); etc. The core of technical analysis can be summarized as, "A price trend will continue until it reverses." Problems arise in precisely defining what time period is relevant, what constitutes a valid trend inside the timeframe, and how a valid trend reversal is to be determined - all in such manner that result in an investment return greater than a buy-and-hold strategy. Current statistical evidence for the utility of technical analysis in generating profits in excess of buy-and-hold is not encouraging.

If you are interested in technical analysis, you really need to become familiar Gartley's work and perspective. I have over 1,000 books in my library covering economics, finance, and investment, and am not aware of any better exposition of technical analysis than "Profits In The Stock Market."

Technical Analysis

If you are a serious investor/trader then this book is for you. Though the primary focus is technical analysis, Mr. Gartley explains the importance of fundamental analysis and the psychological affects that affect the decision-process as well. He explains that you cannot have one without the other if you are a serious investor and you must have all the tools at your disposal if you are going to be successful in the business of investing.
The emphasis is technical in nature but very fundamental in utilization of all tools necessary to becoming a successful in the business of investing. Remember investing is not a game, gambling, or hobby. Investing is a Business. If you are in the business of investing, this book is for you.

Having managed billions of dollars in successful investment transactions, including debt, equity, and real asset ventures, Mr. Harrison earned a reputation as a superb negotiator and business strategist. During his eight years at Cravath Swaine & Moore, one of the world's most prestigious law firms, he handled numerous high-profile debt, equity, and M&A deals. As Co-Head of the market-leading asset management M&A practice at Schulte Roth & Zabel, the premier investment management law firm, he ran some of the most sophisticated public and private deals and facilitated the strategic growth of several prominent financial services and asset management businesses.

A powerful and approachable guide to the legal framework of deal making

This book provides an elegant and deep explanation of the legal framework of deal making. The author has a special way of demystifng otherwise arcane legal concepts in the context of business. The war stories in particular bridge the gap between standard legal provisions and the potential economic outcome in real life. A great read for people who love the art and science of deal making.

The Practical Guide I Return To Again and Again

Christopher Harrison was my professor for his NYU course "Negotiating Corporate Transactions." As a teacher, he was engaging and came across as a seasoned expert in this practice area. If you are a person who learns by example, the "War Stories" Professor Harrison intersperses throughout the book are invaluable illustrations of common (and unique) situations that come up during negotiations. And the structure of the book, taking each section of a merger agreement or purchase agreement and breaking down negotiating points within that section analyzing how those might relate to other key sections of the agreement, is as close to practice as any exercise we did in law school. Now, as a first-year associate practicing M&A, I recognize Make the Deal as the MOST practical and helpful book of the many, many books I purchased during law school, and the one book I find myself returning to again and again.

I have taken Prof.'s Harrison's Negotiating Mergers and Acquisition class in NYU Law and I can say without hesitation that it was one of the most important law school experiences for my legal and business career. In "Make the Deal," Prof. Harrison condenses years of tier 1 M&A experience and allows the reader to understand, appreciate and master the art of a deal. This book is a must read for anyone interested in drafting/negotiation any kind of corporate transactions. As a former litigator, I found it to be particular useful in forming arguments centered around corporate contract disputes.

What a trip!

One of the most interesting, fun, and engrossing books I've ever read--literally going to Hades and back, with a host of humorous characters along the way. "Scabby Turtle," anyone? You learn a lot about traditional Chinese culture, as well... views on the afterlife, the role of bureaucracy, etc. It's a shame there aren't more English translations of Xianzu Tang's works, and it's an even further shame there aren't yet Kindle versions of the few additional ones that exist. Get on it, Amazon!

a delightful love story with lots of action

I am not familiar with Chinese literature and this was a wonderful introduction. As just a "read", this had all the action, love and suspense that one could want. It is a very readable translation, and once into the story it became very difficult to set it down. I would recommend it to anyone that likes a delightful story well told.

The Great Charles Dickens Scandal is a short book about Dickens long relationship with Ellen Ternan his mistress

A few years ago this reviewer read Michael Slater's biography of Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Slater is one of the greatest Dickens scholars in the world. Slater is the Emeritus Professor of Victorian Literature at Birkbeck University of London. He is lectured on Dickens and written many books on the great Boz.
In "The Great Dickens Scandal" Slater presents a careful study of the affair Dickens engaged in with Ellen Ternan. Dickens was the father of 10 children married to Catherine Hogarth Dickens. Mrs. Dickens was fat and over 40 when the dashing Dickens acted in a Manchester 1857 theatrical production of "The Frozen Deep" penned by Wilkie Collins the author's close friend. Ellen was blond, bright, witty and had a lovely figure. She was in the acting profession along with her actress mother Florence. She had two siblings Fanny (who married Tom Trollope, novelist Anthony's brother) and Mamie. Dickens may have fathered a child by Ellen but whether the baby died at birth is up for speculation. Ellen may have given birth in France. Dickens kept up his relationship with her until his death in 1870. She may have been the thirteenth person preent at his internment at Westminster Abbey. She and Dickens were passengers on the wrecked Staplehurst train wreck on June 9, 1865 five years to the day prior to the author's death on June 9, 1870.
This book is a dry examination of the evidence on Dickens and Ellen's life culled from memoirs of the author's children, friends and literary scholars. Slater is to be commended for his outstanding research. However, the book would most appeal to Dickens scholars or someone very familiar with the life and works of Charles Dickens.

Another well-written and well-balanced study of Charles Dickens and Nellie Ternan

As always, Michael Slater maintains a non-judgmental stance, meticulously including all available and pertinent data on the question of Dickens's relationship to the actress, Ellen Ternan, in his finaly fifteen years of life. Slater's famous sense of humor is not always on display, but he accomplishes his goat of laying out the facts and letting the reader decide for himself. A must for those curious to know all there is to know about Nellie and Charles.

A Study of What We May Never Know about Dickens

In 1858, during the production of a play written by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, Dckens met the veteran actress Frances Ternan and her two daughters, Maria and Ellen. That same year, he announced that he and his wife Catherine were separating, which was something of a sensation in Victorian Britain, involving as it did the most popular writer in the English language and a man associated with family values.

For the next 12 years, until his death in 1870, Dickens maintained a relationship with young Ellen Ternan. Exactly what that relationship was has never been truly determined, but it spawned a minor research industry that continues through today.

That research industry is the subject of Michael Slater’s “The Great Charles Dickens Scandal,” and it may tell us more about the generations that followed Dickens than it does about the man himself.

It’s a fascinating book.

Slater, Professor Emeritus of Victorian Literature and Fellow of Birkbeck College at the University of London, is well positioned to tackle the subject. His doctorate at Oxford was on Dickens’ The Chimes. He’s written an acclaimed biography of Dickens. He’s written several books on aspects of Dickens’ life and times, including Dickens on America and Americans (1970), “Dickens and Women” (1983), “The Genius of Dickens” (2011), and “Douglas Jerrold 1803-1857” (2002). He’s a past president of the International Dickens Fellowship and editor of its journal, The Dickensian. And he’s served as trustee and president of the Charles Dickens Museum in London.

The man knows his Dickens. What he explores in “The Great Charles Dickens Scandal” is what can never ultimately be known about Dickens and Ellen Ternan.

For decades after his death, Dickens’ children maintained something of an iron lock on what was written and known about their father. What began to break the story open was a novel published in 1929, entitled This Side Idolatry. It was written by a journalist for the Daily Express, Carl Eric Bechhofer Roberts, and what he tripped over in his research was the possibility, or likelihood, that Ellen Ternan caused the breakdown in Dickens’ marriage.

Slater moves decade by decade, describing additional investigatory work by biographers, journalists, defenders and prosecutors, involving significant names in Britain’s literary establishment (including G.K. Chesterton, who was a Dickens defender). By the 1970s, Ellen Ternan starting receiving her due, particularly as a result of the growing popularity of feminist studies. Peter Ackroyd, author of a mammoth biography of Dickens, argued that the relationship was platonic, given Dickens’ own attitudes toward young women (and there’s precious little proof to the contrary).

Slater looks at all of the decades of work and research, and concludes that “the smoking gun” to prove Dickens and Ternan were physical lovers will likely never be found.

But, oh, what lengths people have gone to in the attempt to prove one thing or another.

The plot of this story is rather irrevant and Pastor Knight is one kinky dirty bird. I had to completely suspend rational thinking to accept Katie's naivety but hey it is fantasy after all. It is indeed a spicy read that is sure to get your motor running. lol This one's definitely for adults who won't be offended by a Pastor abusing his position of power for sexual gratification. It is a short story and a tad overpriced but I can't wait to read the next installation in this titillating series. What will the good Pastor think of next?
