Love the whole series

These books make me wish I could be a part of their world. Not only because flying helicopters was always a dream of mine back in my Army days, but because the people are so likable and the stories are so incredible. Please, read the series. If you like a lot of action with your romance, it's the series for you.

Another good one.

Peter is one of my favorite characters in The Night Stalkers series. He's so smart, and in my mind, very attractive. He's funny, vulnerable, self-effacing and just a really good guy. Mr. Buchman knows how to make you want to actually know his characters. The story is really good and we still get to keep tabs on the characters in previous books. If you're looking for a good love story without many erotic details but still lets you peek into some of those intimate moments, get this book. Read the other ones first though. Wonder what it would be like to have a president like that (sigh).

I would have given this book 5 stars but it seemed more like a novella to me. I think it could have been a little longer. Also, there were some editing problems. Not many, but enough to distract me a little.

Wonderfully satisfying read

When this book was recommended to me, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Admittedly the subject matter wasn't what I'd generally select for myself, but I figured why not give it a shot? Imagine my surprise when I couldn't put it down. This book is beautiful and oh so satisfying--a rarity in many of the works that I read. Call it fate, kismet, whatever--the connection that these two women share is remarkable and the beautiful child that manages to bring them together is clearly heaven sent. The author has a truly lyrical use of language--there's a flow to her writing that draws you in--particularly after the first chapter where it's clear that she's found her rhythm. I wasn't shocked to find out that she's a filmmaker--obviously she has a unique vision as her characters really leap off the page. The two lead females in particular will be great gets for some Hollywood actresses. Also, fair warning: don't read this book on an empty stomach. The decadent descriptions of Irena's magnificent food alone will make you gain ten pounds (and some of that will come from champagne cocktails!). Maybe we'll get a recipe book next?! Read this book. It's a love story in the purest, most compelling sense.

A beautiful debut!

ALMA OF MY HEART is a pleasure to read from start to finish. Susanna Lo weaves a web of magic around the characters she's created, so it's impossible to read their story without falling in love with them. Irena and Tatiana couldn't have more contrasting lives, but are miraculously brought together in the City of Angels by their own angel, Alma, the daughter they share.

I appreciated the insight into Irena's predicament as she does everything in her power to raise her baby, the result of a terrible rape. But it becomes evident that love alone cannot feed and clothe a child, and in an emotionally wrenching scene we see Irena give her baby up, knowing it is for the best. The felicitous route that brings baby Alma to a new family, and then years later brings her two mothers face to face at last, is beautiful beyond words.

The flavors and aromas of Irena's spectacular cooking are shown to have special powers that draw good people towards her and ultimately project her from poverty onto the path towards happiness and fulfillment. I was reminded of the fun magic-realism in the films MISTRESS OF THE SPICES, WOMEN ON TOP and CHOCOLAT.

ALMA OF MY HEART is a unique and spellbinding story that the world has not seen before, and I cannot wait to watch it unfold on the big screen.

Flow Vibrations

"Flow-induced Vibrations" is constructed as an engineering guide primarily based on research sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation located in Hannover, Germany. There are a staggering number of different disciplines and approaches to this subject, and from my own perspective this is one of the best guides published. The work is detailed, logically organized (on purpose), and is the most impressively illustrated work of its kind in print. Explanations are clear and crisp but do not leave the reader hanging either. The math used is first year calculus and can be understood by the average graduate engineer. This is not your treatise on fluid dynamics; it is clearly specific to vibrational analyses induced by fluid flow; air, water, or other. I am most pleased with owning a book of this quality and detail.

Depends on who you are and what you want...

Jan Drenth is an old school protein crystallographer who has seen the evolution of the field right from its inception in the 1950s to the present day. He belongs to the era when Protein Crystallography was dominated by people with serious math and physics skills like Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin, Francis Crick, Max Perutz and John Kendrew. Owing to the lack of good computers in those days, all the calculations had to be done by hand and there was no way you could solve a protein structure if you didn't know what a Fourier Transform was. The situation is very different nowadays where, thanks to computers, even a person who doesn't know how to differentiate a function can solve protein structures.
Understandably, owing to the author's experiences and background, this book is an excellent one for people interested in the real math behind protein crystallography. It is much on the lines of the other classic book by Blundell and Johnson, also crystallographers belonging to the same era as Jan Drenth. It is quite full of mathematics and therefore, is not recommended for biologists or chemists with weak math skills. For such people I would recommend other introductory books on the subject written by Gale Rhodes, David Blow and Alex McPherson. A good approach would be to learn the basics from these intoductory books and 'graduate' to Drenth's book later.

Marvelous even if it's a bit pricey

Journey is one of the most beautiful games this year, one that I really enjoyed playing. It's quite an experience journeying through the haunting landscape, ancient ruins while listening to the enchanting soundtrack.

This artbook is a great companion for the game. It's a 188-page hardcover with nice paper. The art and illustrations are created by Matthew Nava who's the art director at thatgamecompany. He's also the one who art directed the earlier game Flower.

Collected within the book are the concept art for the game with character and creature designs, environment paintings, architecture designs, and even a section on fan art. There's lots of commentary throughout.

The art is as beautiful as the game itself, of course. But with the book you get to see more such as the discarded concepts, e.g. the evolution of the main character design from a more realistic to a stylistic one, unused buildings, locations, etc. The architecture designs are wonderful, with influence from Greek, Islamic and Japanese blended with mystery and an otherworldly feeling. It's interesting to study the use of colours in the game which has a very limited palette and yet can look so good.

One unique feature of the book is its use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology. It's one where you scan the pages with your mobile phone or tablet camera and a virtual reality 3D image pops up into space. It's used to good effect here. For example, for the AR version of one tower in the game, you can turn your camera around it to see it from different perspective, and if you look closely through the windows you can see things moving inside. Very cool. Same with the page on the character designs where the characters will pop up and you can see them move.

Also included in the book is a coupon code to download the soundtrack of the game via the PlayStation Network. Journey: Official Game Soundtrack cost over ten dollars by itself.

This is a marvelous artbook, even if it is rather pricey.

A Bit Expensive, but Still Good

This is a really beautiful book, that's for sure. Hefty, too. It's hardcover book with a book jacket. The book itself is a deep red/maroon color, and there is a picture of a Journeyer standing in front of the mountain (in the style of the murals from the game) stamped in gold on the front cover.

The pages are very high quality - read very heavy/thick and semi-glossy. I thought the pages in a couple of my other artbooks (Uncharted 2 and a couple of Udon books) were nice, but The Art of Journey's outclasses them.

As far as content goes, this does not disappoint. The book is neatly divided into sections (Character, Creatures, Landscapes, etc), and a GORGEOUS two-page spread separates each section. There are complete renders, digital paintings, sketches, artist commentary, and the last few pages feature some delightful fan art.

If you have a smart device, you can use it as a sort of artbook companion. Download an app called "Journey AR Viewer" from the App Store or Google Play and use its AR functionality to view 3D models of on characters or buildings on specific pages.

I wish I had pulled the trigger on this back when Jenova Chen and Matt Nava were signing this! It would've made the $60 a bit more justifiable. The only reason I docked a star was because of its price. I suppose you can subtract $5, since the book includes a PSN code for the Journey Original Soundtrack, but I feel like $55 is still a high price point, especially at less than 200 pages. For comparison's sake, The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (The Art of the Game) from Ballistic sells for $65 (Amazon ~$40), but has 269 pages. Udon's Valkyria Chronicles: Design Archive sells for $50 (Amazon ~30), but has a whopping 397 pages. I guess the AR functionality, hardcover, and page quality drove the price up.

The game didn't disappoint and neither did this book.

I am a digital artist and ever since I first played this game I wanted to take a look at the art behind it. This book does not disappoint in that respect. It includes doodles, sketches, completed concept pieces, to final renders for the game. Giving you a good idea of what went into each part of the game. It's really thorough. It also includes some cool augmented reality aspects if you download the app to view it. A good touch, but not necessary to enjoy and appreciate the amount of quality work that went behind this game. The fact that most of the artwork was done by one person is amazing, and the book presents this persons work really well, and is quite inspiring.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in the process of the artistic design behind a great game, or wants to see the amount of work that goes into making games. This book is a must have for anyone interested in video game art books as well.

About the Author
Sally was born in Germany but grew up and was educated in South Africa. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, which came into good use in the corporate market where she quickly rose to status of Branch Manager within her field. In 1997 she made the life defining decision to follow her passion and resigned to co-write a book. This is the first book she has written without her co-author Warren Veenman who is now her husband. The two have a son and currently reside in both Australasia and South Africa.

Sally Eichhorst is truly inspiring. She writes from deep personal experience and clearly demonstrates anyone can build their resilience and thrive despite the challenges. Each chapter builds on the previous one, leading the reader through a personal reflective journey and guided self-development. well worth the read. The concepts and inspirations are timeless. Integrating disability theory and literary criticism

Rosemarie Garland Thomson has written a book that is groundbreaking and essential reading for anyone interested in the fields of disability theory, disability studies, and literary criticism. She has skillfully examined how the figure of the disabled body has been used in literature in different periods as a marker or boundary line for defining what the "normal" body is or should be. The disabled figure operates to displace anxiety from more "normal" folks, and in the process shows how what we consider to be normal functioning changes across historical periods and cultures. Thomson also compares the disabled figure to the cyborg, as both are figures that are not seen as "natural," and both are places/signifiers where we can then interrogate what the natural is, has been thought to be, and what it could include. This is an excellent book, and should not be missed.

This is a comprehensive and well written book about issues facing those with physical disabilities. Very interesting to look at persons experiencing disability as a social issue, not a medical one. Well researched.
