Beautiful and Horrible....Well Worth the Read

I do not really have the words to describe how much I loved this book and how much it touched me. It is in my top three of the books that have most moved me. It is based off real life events and real people and that is what is so beautiful and horrible about this book. Beautiful because it shows how far people will go for their family and their people and it shows how strong the human spirit is despite every adversity that comes our way. It was horrible because this book showed just how despicable we can be as human beings to our fellow man. There were things that happened in the book that almost brought me to my knees just to read about it I can not imagine surviving such things if it were to really happen to me. The people in this book jump off the page and you keep thinking about this story long after you turn that last page. This is a book I urge everyone to read and to pass on to someone else to read because it is so very important that we not forget what was done to the Natives in our country. Middle Road Maker and Gives Grain and Sitting Bull and countless other people that lived deserve to be remembered not just because they were here before us but because if we forget then we will allow further atrocities like this to happen.

WOW! It's been a long time since I read a book that made FEEL as much as this one did!

This is a very good fictionalized account of historic events. While there are some liberties taken, all in all it's a very accurate portrayal. This took me longer than normal to read because at times I was overcome with emotion and had to have a break. The heartbreak and tragedy is overwhelming at times but, in spite of it there's always hope and love. There is an element of a love story but, that's not the big focus. There are same-sex relationships including the main characters but, again that's not the focus of the story, it's just a part of it. Another reviewer made a comment about modern idioms and I did notice one instance of that but, I didn't notice others. As I first started reading the cadence felt unusual but, as I read I got comfortable with it. I actually think it leant to the feeling that I was listening to a narrative tale. I can't recommend this book enough but, I also caution that it's not a light read. It doesn't gloss over the atrocities that occurred.

Sloooooow.

This book starts out great. Really great.

But I am not sure whether this was originally a serialized novel or whether she just wrote it that way, but it reads as though it's trying to add length with every chapter. It is very, very long and I kind of got tired of waiting for it to get to a point of some sort.

So I made it about halfway, and I might go back and try again, but I'm not sure.

I also wished she'd had someone edit it for language use. Considering that these are supposed to be Indians during the American westward migration, there's an awful lot of 21st century idiomatic usage here. It affects the mood of the book, and breaks the reader out of the historical mindset.

I’ve become a big fan of Christina Tetreault over the last few years. When I discovered the opportunity to purchase the audio version for $1.99, I immediately took advantage of it. This is Book 5 in her The Sherbrookes of Newport series, and it’s the best one I have read so far!

Trent Sherbrooke is the typical playboy, never having any type of relationship other than sexual with any women. While his initial plans to go along with his campaign manager’s suggestion to find a suitable wife, sounded like a good option to help repair his damaged image, he does not believe Addison would be the right woman. He thinks he needs a woman who is well aware that it will be strictly a business arrangement, mutually beneficial for both of them.

When a picture shows up in the tabloids, and his manager tells him she is exactly what he needs, he balks, but eventually goes along. He soon realizes that Addison is a woman of substance, and he no longer wants just a marriage of convenience. He wants the real deal.

Can what started out as a means to an end, turn into a forever kind of love, or will Addison run if she finds out how their romance originally started?

Redeeming a Billionaire is a fast-paced, easy reading experience. Ms. Tetreault’s writing style is smooth and flowing, making this an engaging story. The plot is believable and the characters are great.

Addison is an endearing heroine, and I became fully vested in her character from the start. It was hard to trust Trent since he had such a bad reputation as a “love ’em and leave ’em” kind of guy, but she still manages to open her heart to him and believe he can fall in love with her.

At first, I was not sure I would like Trent. His reasoning for going along with his manager’s suggestion is underhanded and does not show him in a favorable light. As the romance unfolds, his quick turn around involving his feelings for Addison, went a long way in getting me to fall in love with his character. By the end of the book, I was rooting for him to win Addison’s devotion.

The sensuality of Redeeming a Billionaire is a step up from what is normally there in Ms. Tetreault’s books, and definitely,​ fit this story. The chemistry between Trent and Addison is combustible, and I thoroughly enjoyed their love affair.

I listened to the audio version performed by Piper Goodeve and really enjoyed her narrative. She reads with just the right amount of emotion and gives the characters distinct voices. I will be looking for other books narrated by Ms. Goodeve.

If you like a light-hearted love story with good depth of character and a great plot, then you will love Redeeming a Billionaire as much as I did. Although this book is part of a series, it is a stand-alone. Happy reading!

Cinderella story.

This is a good story.
Trent is going to run for a Senate seat. His advisor thinks he needs to find a wife and get married to get rid of his playboy appearance.
He runs into Addie,literally, She acts like she doesn't know or recognize him. That intrigues him.
Addie knows about Trent and his family.
Trent & Addie run into each other again and they start talking to get to know each other. Feelings start to change and Trent's advisor thinks Addie is the one to help Trent's reputation.
Trent has other ideas and then Addie finds out what Trent and his advisor is up too and she leaves him. Now it's up to Trent to fix it.
Good ending but wish there was more to the stories ending.

Politics, billions of dollars, family, love, desire, determination, honesty, integrity…put all of these together and you have a delightful Romance between Trent Sherbrooke, of the Sherbrookes of Newport, and Addison, i.e. Addy, of the Ambrosia Pastry and Caf� Shop family. Their meeting and romance developed from a normal life event, and when either of them most expected to find their true love. The story made me smile, laugh, become concerned and annoyed at a male- see all normal feelings!! You will be able to see yourself as Addy and you will love Trent. This book left me smiling.

A mosaic

Many reviewers here complained that the book went too far into drugs, the life stories of the characters, and other details. I guess they were expecting a fantasy novel where Americans show up, kick butt Rambo style, and then emerge victorious. That isn't the story here. This is a tale of how the American boys who went to war became men. This is about how society at the time was reflected in our military. Yes, there was a lot of drug use in the book. I have news for you, there used to be a lot of drug use in the military. That is how we got the random drug screens of today.
The story confronts a lot of the same issues that were facing the soldiers then: racism, societal unrest, drugs, and knowing that their friends were dying for nothing in a war that was already lost. At the point of this story, the drawdowns had already begun. By that point in the Vietnam War, we were committed to the "Vietnamization" process, i.e., monthly withdrawing U.S. troops by the thousands and in the process handing over combat responsibilities to South Vietnamese Army units (ARVN).
This story places you in the middle of an American infantry company late in the war, and lets you see it from the perspective of the soldiers who were there. For anyone that is interested in this time period, this is an excellent book.

Excellent book. A real tour de force

Excellent book. A real tour de force. Tells the story of Alpha Company, as they took part in a major operation in August of 1970 in the Khe Ta Laou Valley in what was then South Vietnam. The story is told primarily through the eyes of three characters: a radio man (Cherry), his platoon sergeant (Egan), and their company commander (Brooks). Although it is a novel, it is based on an actual operation which took place at the same time and in the same place that this story is set. The author was there and also interviewed many others who were there in the process of writing this novel.

Although it is long, The 13th Valley is also a gripping read. I had a hard time putting down. It does not glorify the experience of war at all. All three main characters evolve as the story progresses as they deal with the pressures they face. Some changes are for the good, others are not. Among other things it illustrates how and why men who have served in traumatic wartime conditions develop PTSD.

There is a glossary in the back which I found to be very useful. The maps also helped me to visualize where Alpha Company was at various points in the story.

If you are looking for more books like this one then I recommend reading Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes.

Vietnam War Story

I had served with the Marines in Vietnam so many of the concepts and methods used by the Army are different. Some of the book was interesting and some did not seem factual, such as smoking in the bush, this was a no no as the enemy could smell the smoke. Also allowing such a goof off as one of the characters to remain in the bush would not have happened in the Marines... but then again I served during an earlier time period and so it may have been different later on. We also did not have helicopters to move us, we either walked or road amtracs most of the time.

I could relate to some of the information, but was not sure why there was all the emphasis on the girl friends at home. Also leaving a man behind was not something that I am sure the Army would have done.... the book ends with 3 MIAs..

About the Author
A consulting engineer residing in Montgomery, texas, Heinz. P. Bloch has held machinery-oriented staff and line positions with Exxon affiliates in the United States, Italy, Spain, England, The Netherlands, and Japan. His career spanned several decades prior to his 1986 retirement as Exxon Chemical's regional machinery specialist for the USA. Since his retirement from Exxon, he has been in demand throughout the world as a consultant and trainer in the areas of failure avoidance, root cause failure identification, and reliability improvement. Mr. Bloch is the author/co-author of thirteen books and over 200 other publications on subjects related to machinery reliability and failure avoidance. He is the Reliability and Equipment Editor of Hydrocarbon Processing magazine and has served as chair of the annual conference program for Hydrocarbon Processing's Process Plant Reliability Conference for a number of years.

Fred K. Geitner is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada, engaged in process machinery consulting. He retired from Imperial Oil with 20 years of service as an engineer.

Small but great

Gave this to my grandaughter who is in her 1st year of guitar. It seemed a bit pricy as it is very short-but it has lots of good information in it in understandable ways for beginners and some standard Christmas music. If you were to buy each of these songs separately as sheet music it would have been even more expensiive so all in all the cost is okay.
My grandaughter loves the book and her teacher approved as well. Yes would recommend

Some songs just don't sound right with the chords used. It is easy to play most songs and the print is easy to read in poor lighting. It's a good place to start and motivates new players to practice more.
