About the Author
Dr. Patricia Thompson is an award-winning teacher, researcher, and corporate psychologist who has consulted to senior executives since 2004. On the way to earning her PhD in Clinical Psychology, she was educated at the University of Toronto, Georgia State University, The University of Pennsylvania, and the Emory School of Medicine. She currently teaches corporations and individuals how to leverage the science of positive psychology to enhance their personal and professional results, believing that a holistic approach that addresses one’s body, mind, and spirit is the key to achieving peak performance in a variety of domains. A brilliant explanation of how to accelerate your personal growth and professional development and then help others to do so

The last time I checked, Amazon US offers 113,746 books for sale in the general category of "leadership" and 45,153 books in the "business leadership" category. Why another? Albert Einstein provided the best answer years ago when chided by a Princeton colleague that he always asked the same questions on his final examinations. "Quite true. Each year, the answers are different."

What Patricia Thompson offers in her book is a cohesive, comprehensive, and resource-effective program by which to achieve two critically important strategic objectives, whatever the size and nature of the given organization may be: helping aspiring leaders to accelerate their personal growth and professional development, and, to prepare those leaders to help others to do so, including but by no means limited to their direct reports.

What is a consummate leader? Its etymology dates to the classic Latin word, "consummatus," meaning "perfected, complete." Back to Einstein's observation, for a moment: The nature and extent of consummate leadership in ancient Greece or Rome are quite different from what they have become since Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th president of the United States. So, in Thompson's opinion, what are the defining characteristics of a consummate leader today? She suggests seven:

o Self-Awareness
o Spirituality
o Self-Management
o Positivity
o Authenticity
o Effective Relationship Building
o Skillful Coaching and Developing

All of these are essential to what I characterize as "leadership for all seasons." Throughout history, all great leaders can be viewed as "gardeners" with a "green thumb" who "grew" other people. This perspective is also compatible with Thompson's covey of characteristics. She devotes a separate chapter to each. I should add, all that she says is wholly consistent with "perfected, complete" but as she would be the first to point out, those two terms are the destination of a never-ending process of development. The men and women almost universally regarded as consummate leaders (from Elizabeth I and Catherine the Great to Winston Churchill and Mohandas Gandhi) were seriously flawed human beings. To cherish them is not to deify them.

No brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the abundance of information, insights, and counsel that Patricia Thompson provides but I hope that I have at least indicated why I think so highly of this book. I strongly recommend it, especially to those now preparing for a career in business or who have only recently embarked on one and who aspire to become a leader. Also, to middle managers who need her help to understand and appreciate the fact that all organizations must have effective (consummate) leadership, not only in the C-Suite but at all levels and in all areas throughout the given enterprise.

Leader Within

Often when we think we are at our lowest we are able to do great things anyway. According to author Patricia Thompson, this book The Consummate Leader began during a time when she was a bit lost. She had a messy break up, trying to find a path to her dreams, and working at being comfortable in her chosen profession. A plateful of problems to most folks, but Thompson doubled down and wrote this book.
This book has something for everyone. At the end there is a nice exercise where the reader can ask some pertinent tough questions about themselves. The book is also sprinkled with gems of wisdom and exercises.
What I got out of the book is that becoming or being a leader is a constant “work in progress”. Yes, you may have the inclination to take the lead but to do it well you need to take a 360 approach.
The book has real life case studies and examples of what works. This book is ideal for those starting out in their careers or those that just need a reboot 2.0 to reenergize the inner leader within.

Not just for managers and CEO's

If everyone followed the suggestions for self-development outlined in this book, it would change the world for the better. Parents, teachers--anyone who relates to anybody else, in any context can benefit from the exercises and suggestions Dr. Thompson mentions.

The skeptical are met with empirical evidence, served up in Thompson's down-to-earth, often humorous style. She also offers case studies and stories drawn from her own life. In other words, she demonstrates that she not only talks the talk, but has walked the walk, and continues to do so.

The Consummate Leader is a wise investment. I'll give one to my graduating senior next year, and I'd suggest that others do the same. These lessons can't be learned too early!

I really enjoyed the book

As an admirer of the former president,I really enjoyed the book.In simple terms and excellent phrasing backed up with facts,the author gave President Obsma the credit he deserves for a job well done while still also giving the other side of the coin.

A Remarkable Presidency - Facts and no Fiction

Mr. D'Antonio delivered a beautiful rendition on the Obama Presidency. It reviews all the important stations during the 8 years and comes to the conclusion that this presidency was a remarkable one. I loved to read it and, in my opinion, reflects the Obama Presidency without any pathos or glorification. Barack Obama was a remarkable president and Michael D'Antonio wrote a very good book about the first African-American President of these United States.

Grammar Rulz has become the way my students start class every day. It is a fantastic student-led activity for middle-school students because they get to spend the first minutes of class thinking about and looking critically at language. And the students look forward to it as much as I do. This is by far the best daily language program I have ever encountered. I love the fact that I can just project it on the whiteboard, kids can come up and correct it, and then we can instantly click to the next page to check the work. Erik Ortman is a middle-school teacher with more than twelve years of classroom experience. He currently teaches a seventh-grade language arts/social studies blended class and eighth-grade language arts at the American International School in Buenos Aires. He has wide experience integrating language arts with social studies and teaching with technology.

Highly recommended! Aweosme, practical classroom resource!

I use Grammar Rulz with my 7th graders and it is the perfect way to start each class. The students look forward to it, and as a Humanities teacher, I think it's an ideal tool for teaching grammar and conventions in context, not to mention an excellent way to get the students focused and ready to learn.
The students love the fact that they have a concrete number of conventions errors to look for, and that they can come up to either the white board or the SMART board to make the corrections after they have made them on their own papers. And, I love the fact that I can lead in to teaching mini-lessons about rules of punctuation, capitalization and usage. Later, I can connect those same lessons to their own writing.
In addition, each set of lessons is a story filled with elements of high interest for middle schoolers. While studying medieval Europe in Social Studies class, students get a story filled with romance and intrigue about the Middle Ages for their daily grammar work. They love it.
Each lesson takes only a few minutes, but can be expanded as needed to further discuss the rules associated with the lesson of the day. Each lesson also contains a vocabulary word, and a chance to differentiate instruction for students who need a little extra challenge.
In short, I cannot imagine my Language Arts class without this invaluable tool!

Grammar Rulz Rules!

Grammar Rulz is a highly interactive and fun way to learn grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. It is hard to imagine a more user-friendly and effective way to work on these concepts.
The activity is divided in a series of one page entries or paragraphs, each one needing exactly twelve corrections. Each page is followed by a grammar rule and short exercise directly related to the corrections. The students quickly develop a sense of routine and look forward to it. Since the activity comes with a SMART Board / White Board component, it is highly interactive. The students love to come out to the board and work on the corrections. The activity is envisioned as fun and low-stress, so students look forward to engaging in it. Another feature that I really enjoy is the corrections page which follows each entry. Students enjoy making predictions about the corrections and having a chance to compare their work with the corrections page immediately. The lessons are short, only a few minutes, but can be expanded according to need. They often give me a chance to jump into a mini lesson. Best of all, Grammar Rulz comes with built in assessment and differentiation.
This is a well-designed, effective, and engaging activity. A definite keeper in the intermediate language/humanities classroom!

Great Writing Resource!

The research is clear: If you want kids to learn grammar, teach it in context. That's only one of the strengths of Grammar Rulz!, a book of language exercises that help middle school students master the conventions of writing. The context used - engaging stories set in commonly studied historical periods - fits well at the middle school level, and the exercises can be effectively utilized in both language arts and social studies classrooms.

A unique (and very useful) aspect of this book is the variety of delivery methods available. There's a method for everyone: chalkboard/whiteboard, overhead, and hard copies. The accompanying CD includes files to deliver the exercises via multimedia computer/projector, Mimio interactive systems and SMART boards. Vary your methods and find the one that works best for you and your students.

These fun and efficient exercises benefit all students, but they are particularly helpful to the ESL population. In addition to the clear directions and focused format, the exercises focus on irregular verbs, subject/verb agreement, and common usage issues. Exercises provide rich opportunities for authentic conversations about both language and content.

Public Infrastructure Management

This book provides a helpful tool in trying to understand how the public infrastructure works for us. It stresses how important organization of information is when dealing with a system this large with many integral pieces. Without public infrastructure in this day and age, where would we be? As an example, we often take our roadways for granted. But we never stop to think about how much work is involved in maintaing them, the volume of materials needed, and where the funding comes from. Without coordination and a strong infrastructure management database system, upkeep of important public infrastructure on a daily basis would never be possible. This book put an interesting perspective on how the puzzle is put together.

This book has detailed information on "life cycle costs" and "infrastructure asset management". The book was primary reference book when I took the course in the US in year 1999-2000. The same book is the being used as primary reference book in the current year in a construction oriented college in India.
