barely revised form the 1995 fourth edition

Do you want this book? Do you have to buy it for a class? I've just compared the fourth and sixth editions and I am here to tell you that there are very few differences. Sure, there are a few important practices (rubrics) that are not in the earlier editions but all in all the older edition is so close that if you want to save yourself $100, buy the older one. Really. Almost word for word the sections that are the same (and it's 90% of the book) are unrevised. Save your money. Buy the older version. It's the same thing.

This is a fine collection of b&w drawings by four different artists, all inspired by Mexico's Day of the Dead folk art.

Sure, there are plenty of ornately decorated skulls, but check out these skeletal mariachi bands! Then take a gander at the zombified religious icons, skeletons in hot rods, and the grateful dead quaffing tequila. (It's quite interesting that most of the female skeletons have somehow managed to keep abundant flesh in the chest area...)

The artwork in this book has made me contemplate, for the first time in my life, getting a tattoo. Should I go for the Dia de los Muertos-flavored C3PO, or the dead rubber chicken?

About the Author

Anita Woolfolk Hoy was born in Fort Worth, Texas, where her mother taught child development at TCU and her father was an early worker in the computer industry. She is a Texas Longhorn—all her degrees are from the University of Texas, Austin, the last one a Ph.D. After graduating, she was a psychologist working with children in elementary and secondary schools in 15 counties of central Texas. She began her career in higher education as a professor of educational psychology at Rutgers University, and then moved to The Ohio State University in 1994. Anita’s research focuses on motivation and cognition, specifically students’ and teachers’ sense of efficacy and teachers’ beliefs about education. She is the editor of Theory Into Practice, a journal that brings the best ideas from research to practicing educators. With students and colleagues, she has published over 80 books, book chapters, and research articles. Anita has served as Vice-President for Division K (Teaching & Teacher Education) of the American Educational Research Association and President of Division 15 (Educational Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. Just before completing this 12th edition of Educational Psychology, she collaborated with Nancy Perry, University of British Columbia, to write the first edition of Child Development (Pearson, 2012), a book for all those who work with and love children. Her next project is the 4th edition of Instructional Leadership: A Research-Based Guide to Learning in School (Pearson), written with her husband, Wayne K. Hoy, the Novice Fawcett Chair of Educational Administration at The Ohio State University.

justifiably a first choice in ed psych texts

Educational psychology is a field in which there has been an explosion of research (and of theories) in the past 30 years, and a matching proliferation of educational fads and products that are being marketed to school systems every day as the fix for one problem or another. Dr. Woolfolk Hoy brings order to this cacophony, highlighting the theories that seem to do the best job of explaining how students (and teachers) think and behave, and emphasizing what has actually worked in classrooms. Probably the author, in light of her prodigious experience and deserved authority, could be even more selective in what work she chooses to mention, but sorting through the stacks of journal articles is a huge endeavor, and I give Dr. W-H full marks for her conscientiousness and fairness. She does not run with the fads, but gives her critical evaluation of the research on both sides.

Excellent text for college course on parties (& elections)

I teach Political Science at a liberal arts college, and have used the 13th edition of this text for two semesters in my Parties & Elections course. I find it to be an excellent text. As the title suggests, the book focuses on political parties (rather than elections), covering "party in government," "party organization," and "party in the electorate" thoroughly. That said, Party Politics in America goes beyond parties to discuss material more relevant to elections as well: It includes two chapters on nominations, one chapter on the general election, and a chapter on campaign finance. The "party in the electorate" section also does a great job covering electoral behavior. So that's professor's perspective; I should add that my students also seem to enjoy the text. It's informative while also being kind of fun. The one problem with the 13th edition is that, although copyrighted in 2009, it doesn't make it to the 2008 general election; the updated 14th edition, which I adopted for my fall course, does.

Needed more attention from a Proofreader, but informative.

I'm still taking the class that requires this textbook, so I'm only 10 chapters deep into this 15 chapter text. So far, every chapter has at least one grammar, spelling, or punctuation error, if not much more. While that does get annoying, Hilyard's book provides a clear and thorough introduction to the Oil & Gas industry without being overly technical. By the 2nd chapter, I was able to carry on conversations about the industry with my dad, who retired from the field close to 20 years ago.

If the editing and proofreading were carried out more professionally, I would have rated this textbook 5 stars without hesitation.

Generally excellent. I would like to see more extensive coverage of Peak Oil, Shale Oil, Kerogen Oil, and the Olduvai Theory, and the implications of all these.
