The "mandate" in the British Mandate for Palestine, is a trust.

This book, "The Mandate for Mesopotamia and the Principle of Trusteeship in English Law" contains a lecture given by the author at London University in May, 1921 about a year after the meeting of the WWI Allies in San Remo in which they recognized the Jews historic association with Palestine by creating a mandate that put the political rights to Palestine in trust for the Jews. Their action made Palestine into a Jewish National Home in which Jews could stay as a matter of right while they built up their population. At the time, Jews in Palestine constituted only a small part of the population of the area. In establishing the British Balfour policy, Britain decided it would not be a good idea to place the Jews as immediate sovereigns of Palestine because they constituted only a minority of the population. Critics of the proposed Balfour Policy were claiming that to do so would establish a government that was "antidemocratic". In a memorandum of the British Foreign Office dated September 19, 1917, Arnold Toynbee explained that while in concept the Balfour policy of recognition of the Jews as the owners of the political rights to Palestine would be antidemocratic, in practice it would not be. That is because these rights were to be placed in trust until the Jews flourished in their National Home and brought in from the diaspora many more Jews so as ultimately to result in a Jewish majority population in Palestine. With these political rights in trust, the Jews would have only a beneficial interest in them. The trustee -- either England or the United States were contemplated ain 1917 -- would have legal dominion over the political rights and therefore could exercise the sovereignty over Palestine until such time as the Jews attained a majority and were otherwise ready to rule. Then the legal dominion over the rights would vest in the Jews. Until that time, the guardian would have legal dominion over them and could exercise a temporary sovereignty to the extent permitted by the trust document. The WWI Allies at San Remo expressly adopted the Balfour policy and it became International Law.

Typically, the word "mandate" brings to mind the concept of an "order" rather than a "trust". However the mandates were based on Article 22 of the League of Nations Covenant that shows the purpose for their creation as as legal instruments that were based on the British legal concepts of trusts and guardianships. The author specifically directed his comments to the Mandate for Mesopotamia, but his remarks are equally applicable to the other mandates established by the League of Nations including the British Mandate for Palestine. This lecture is available on line but I found it useful to buy it in a bound hard copy available from Amazon.

The lushly laid-out, usually rigorous and ever-trendy magazine Artforum is one of the long-running successes of the critical community. Newman (co-editor, Defining Modern Art: Selected Writings of Alfred H. Barr, Jr.) is well placed as a former managing editor of ArtNews magazine to tell the tale of the first dozen years of the magazine and its crucial championing of conceptual art, which eventually triumphed. Yet this bloated and repetitive volume suffers from its format: mostly unchallenged statements of "oral history" from various journalists and editors who were there. The extensive recollections include much vicious infighting and backstabbing, especially involving the polemicist and poetaster (and if this book is any evidence, nasty-tempered) Michael Fried, who is told on by a number of interviewees. And few pages in modern art history can be as boring as Newsweek art critic Peter Plagens's detailed account of his schooling, various fellowships and jobs, faithfully printed here word for word. Newman reportedly spent nine years on this project, which may have been far too many. The more terse statements, such as those by veteran art historians Robert Rosenblum and David Rosand, are among the most lucid and scene-setting. The late Meyer Schapiro, one of the ?minences grises of modernist studies, gives a noble and benevolent impression, and one suspects if his involvement with the magazine had been more direct, the combative atmosphere might have ameliorated. This is one case where the human details behind print achievement actually belittle the work, rather than offering insights into what was accomplished. A reader genuinely interested in the real importance of Artforum might do well to simply read back issues. The personalities here interfere too much with the transmission of ideas. A Wet Dream for John Mayer fans that play guitar

I have been waiting for this for so long. A tabbed out version of Covered in Rain. Honestly it is about 7 years too late. But I would have KILLED for this at the beginning of my guitar journey when I obsessively played john mayer 24 hours a day. Now i've gotten accustomed to doing this on my own. But still this book is robust and amazing. So buy it, worth EVERY penny.

Superb Debut

It is gratifying to me, and it comes along so rarely, that a story has the trifecta of important pieces, all developed well: character, setting and plot. Zoya and Marcus are 'everyman' in different ways, Marcus in recovery from a “Mesh” addiction (that escape to a fantasy world of his choosing where his body is stabilized in a bed and his head hooked into escape instead of reality), son of a very wealthy (but mostly dead) man who had managed to finally eradicate viruses from the online world. Zoya is working poor in a place with DRASTIC disparities between people who can do pretty much anything they want and people barely getting by. And Ted manages to give them realistic motive to get involved and realistic means to 'up their game' to the necessary skills. The setting is fascinating and seems realistic, given the distance in the future, and the plot is highly tense and comes together (several PoV characters start in different places) well.

More than all this though, this is the first book I've read in quite some time that was completely Un-put-downable. I found myself reaching for it every chance I got. Even if you are not a Sci-Fi or Cyberpunk fan normally, the thriller nature of this and the great characters will pull you in.

The Immortality Game is worth your money

You know when a friend has written a book, and you think of the other books written by other friends that really weren't good, but you keep buying books by your friends because 1) they're your friends, and 2) 1 in 10 is very, very good, so you go ahead and buy the book, and hope you can be honest with your friend afterward? I had those concerns buying The Immortality Game. I know Ted Cross. I like Ted Cross, human. And now, I'm thrilled to report that I'm a fan of Ted Cross, author. Ted asked me to write a review of his book, but he has no idea what I'm about to say.
The Immortality Game is a rush. You tear through 2 insanely difficult days in the lives of the characters, and Cross' writing pulls you through chapter after chapter. I was late for work one morning, because I started reading the book with my coffee, and didn't want to put it down. I even forgot to drink my coffee (and people who know me know that I never forget to drink my coffee).
It isn't just an exciting blast through events; like all good science fiction, you are led to think philosophically about life, about what the future of computing might be, and how connected we really want to be with one another. You get a little questioning of the morality of certain aspects of cloning, some major class divisions, and some deep, deep problems with addiction and its implications. But all that philosophy is imbedded in the story so seamlessly that you find yourself thinking about it later, rather than feeling bogged down in reading it.
I would have loved to give it 5 stars, but there are enough minor hiccups in language usage to give me pause. They are the sort of thing that would be caught by a team of editors at a larger publisher, but the story telling compelled me onward.
You need to read this book.

It's Taken, But You Don't Fully Know What Comes Next

Very good premise, very well developed world, extremely well-developed, rounded characters. All of it just tacked on to a good, but not special plot.

The plot of this book is a chase story, our wonderful protagonist Zoya and her foil Marcus are chased through a moderately far future Russian city. This is all well and good, but the middle of it is just the same couple scenes over and over again. This is where I got frustrated. Thankfully it was saved by the well written characters. And of special note the plot device of "Oh no I have been given the skills of a super soldier, I'm scared and can't use them against bad guys" was handily avoided.

So while I was frustrated by the repetitiveness at times, Ted Cross really did a good job of subverting my expectations and making a fairly decent story. I'm afraid this book isn't one of my top, but I could be convinced to read some of his other stuff. This was, after all, his debut novel.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a novel version of Taken and with a female protagonist instead of Liam Neeson. And Ruskies.

pretty good

This was good exam prep. The questions hit on all the quirky little rules in Will/Trusts law. It is a little heavy on Property law (remainders subject to divestment, blah, blah), which my final exam didn't focus on (thank god).
