Book For Z/28 lovers

"Untold Secrets" is a misleading title... This book is all and *only* about Chevrolet's efforts in the old Trans-America road race series. As you may know, the desire to be competitive in Trans-Am led to Chevrolet developing the Z/28 option package in the first place. Hood induction, twin carburetion on the 302, chassis set up, and the famous JL-1 (SP?) four-wheel disk brakes are all covered in great detail. If your interest lies in the first generation Camaro OVERALL, then I'd skip this one. 1st gen Z car enthusiasts, however, will love this book.

3rd Ed comming in 2015

As previous poster said the new 3rd edition is to be released in 2015. DO NOT GET PRICE GOUGED BY THESE SELLERS!! The new copy will have all color print while this 2nd ed is black and white. Unless this is a must have now wait until Cornell finishes the publication of the 3rd edition.

*UPDATE* - Cornell has dropped the ball again on the publishing date. They now expect to release the new edition in 2016.

Simply Wonderful

The folks at Cornell have done it again. This is a huge book, packed full of information, but it is also a joy to read. Even though it supplies plenty of the "encyclopedic" material, it's a bit reminiscent of David Attenborough's "Life of Birds" DVD, in that it highlight some of the "gee-whiz" aspects of birds, such as egg mimicry, artistic bower construction, lymphatic penises in ducks, and so forth. There was a surprising section on nocturnal birding by ear, which I had never seen addressed. They seem to have covered every topic and then some.

If you have only a casual interest in birds, this book may be overkill, but if you are a birder or ornithology student I'm sure you'll enjoy deepening your appreciation and understanding of birds with the help of this book.

Overpriced out of print, wait for 3rd ed

Just FYI, I have only flipped through this book briefly and do not actually own a copy, though I would very much like to.

However, the current prices offered by third party sellers on this site and others are tremendously inflated. While the book is no longer in print, it was originally sold new by Cornell for $100. Obviously, prices like $300 for a used copy are a bit exorbitant. However, Cornell IS working on a 3rd edition that they will sell, so if you can wait, you will once again be able to purchase this book at a reasonable price sometime in the future.

I used this book in Graduate School at Purdue in a Gas Dynamics class taught by the co-author, J.D. Hoffman. A excellent, in-depth text, that starts with the fundamentals and builds. The best and most comprehensive book on the subject I've seen.

If you want to understand about Gas Dynamics, better read this book. It can be either used as a text book or as a reference. A must for a person dealing with thermo-fluid mechanics.

A classic

If you don't already have Zucrow's Gas Dynamics, then perhaps you should. Excellent, lucid read. Every equation is derived, which is most helpful. Chapter 4 is especially interesting (1D isentropic flow with area change), My only "complaint," if you could consider it so, is that the treatment for Mass Addition in Chapter 9 was far too brief. It is akin to the "ballistic element method" used in some preliminary solid propellant rocket motor design codes such as SPP. Expansion on that topic would be welcomed, and perhaps even a brief treatment about the serious problem of slot flow and vena contracta (mentioned on one page only). Even though that is a 2D/3D problem, it is not even mentioned in Gas Dynamics Volume 2. A great read... Buy This Book!

An inspiring book for anybody, not just artists.

I just got done with this book and I really found it uplifting and inspiring. Even if you have never been diagnosed with a mental illness, this book makes it apparent how similar people really are underneath it all. Every chapter starts off with an excerpt from David’s journal from that particular time in his life which gives the story a unique perspective. I love that the chapters are short and sweet, making the book easy to pick up and put down. Also, David tells his story in such an easy, conversational way that it really feels like you are sitting down and having a little chat.

I could really relate to David’s struggle with finding traditional corporate jobs unmanageable, and struggling with the pressure of supporting a family when he couldn’t seem to “get his act together.” After years of battling crippling depression and anxiety, David finally found his place in the world when he discovered art and it gave him an outlet and a sense of purpose. Unlike so many biographies of artists which can have sad endings, I really found it inspiring to know that today David is a successful, full time artist with a loving family.

The biggest takeaways I had after reading this book are the value of maintaining strong friendships and the importance of sheer determination when facing obstacles. I really found it inspiring to see someone with so many struggles make something of his life. Also, I found it interesting to read about Scandinavia in a realistic way (i.e., not being portrayed as some kind of utopia).

The Art of Surviving

I discovered David, The Artist, before I realized there was David, The Writer. An honestly written memoir, warts and all, that describes, at least in the limited ways that words can, the daily walk with mental illness. My personal experience in dealing with this illness finds me drawn to another perspective, to the world of David's wife, Kersti. I hope she will write her own memoir one day and tell of her battles to understand David's battle. I found the writing to be compelling and well done, short chapters made reading a pleasure, with rest breaks and time to reflect. Oddly, I raced through the written portion of the book, basically ignoring the glorious artwork included along the way, because I didn't want to stop reading. Once I had finished reading, of course I went back to savor the selections of David's own works intermingled with that of other artists who have been influential in the development of David's own unique and personal style. I am proud to own and display an original gouache by David, and I am so glad that his fifteen years of hard work on this touching story has produced a written work of art that the entire world can share.

I've been waiting for this book to come out for a long time. David Sandum is an amazing person and philanthropist. He has been struggling to get this written and published for 15 years. I was deeply moved by the first few pages, the Authors note says it all. It's not easy to share such a deeply personal story with the world. I'm so glad he did. I have family members who have battled depression, and anxiety, and it helps to know that we are not alone. David's story is a moving account of how art has helped him to heal and cope through art, and how he has managed to live a meaningful and good life despite living with this illness. It's important that we start to recognize that it truly is an illness, and nothing to be ashamed of. Davids story is a candid, inspiring and courageous one.

Review of Ernst Mach's "The Science of Mechanics"

I am continuing my quest to read the original papers and books of the great physicists. This was an essential part of that quest as Einstein was supposedly greatly influenced by Ernst Mach's ideas. I do not believe you will find direct links between this book and Einstein's relativity but Mach's ideas on relative motion are at least stated.

The contents did not disappoint me as this book is teaching physics through history. Ernst Mach took the historical records and accounts of the great discoveries and placed them within the historical context that they require for the true understanding of their scope. It attempts to give insights into the mental processes that these people had to go through and often gives a Mach-ian re-interpretation showing how physics teachers of his own day were devaluing the historical approach to the extent that the students were not getting all they needed for true understanding of the subject.

Mach's insights into Newton were different and made Newton "the man" more human than the 1 day sound byte delivered in most lectures today.

This is not Mach's "Science of Mechanics" as advertised. It is a scanned-in copy of the "Supplementary Volume" that came with the Third English edition of the work. Save your money.

Pretty old book & Not enough tool pics. I needed a book with pics of tools and HOW to use them. Oh well, back to looking for a good book.

Not what I was expecting

I was on the waiting list for this to be published for several months. I did not realize it was just a reprint of a very old book. It's very detailed and wouldn't say it's a beginner book. Was looking for something a little more basic with more illustrations.

Trust me this book is not for beginners;I am a detail person and could not get to first base on comprehension. (I was looking for a book that would give basic tips on repairs and this was not the book.
