Understanding Human Nature, by Alfred Adler

2010 Reprint of 1927 English Edition. Adler provides a practical understanding of how childhood shapes adult life, which in turn might benefit society as a whole. Unlike the culturally elitist Freud, Adler believed that the work of understanding should not be the preserve of psychologists alone, but a vital undertaking for everyone to pursue, given the bad consequences of ignorance. This approach to psychology was unusually democratic for psychoanalytic circles. It is a work that anyone can read and understand.

From the Back Cover
Long-regarded as the handbook of Individual psychology, `Understanding Human Nature' provides an accessible introduction to Adler's key concepts, with which he moved away from his colleague Freud's thinking. These include inferiority/ superiority complexes; memories and dreams; love marriage and children; and sexuality and sexual problems. Adler's holistic personality-based approach to psychology continues to be relevant today to students, the general public and professionals alike.

Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology
By Chris Brand
Written 1993, subsequently shortened

Alfred Adler (1870-1937), the first heretic of psychoanalysis, barely scraped through childhood. The second of six children of a Viennese grain merchant, he suffered from rickets and spasms of the glottis. He almost died on several occasions from pneumonia and street accidents. In the cot alongside him when he was three, his nearest younger brother did actually die of diphtheria. Undaunted, however, by his diminutive stature (5' 2") or by his maths' teacher's pessimistic forecasts, he succeeded in medical school, in ophthalmology, in family life and eventually, despite Freud's preferring to advance the established Gentile psychiatrist, Carl Jung, in popularising a form of psychoanalysis. True to his own history, Adler would see competition between peers for resources as much more important than incestuous infantile sexuality. Now there is a pleasant yet authentic, new, and of course 'non-sexist' translation of one of his best-known works.

Today, some of Adler's proposals are admittedly a little creaky. Adler tended to maintain that 'lifestyle' crystallizes by one's first birthday. He held intelligence testing (even of the 'g' factor) to be "unreliable"; and genetic inheritance of intelligence (or of anything else psychological) was a "superstition". Adler feared 'labelling' effects by which he believed he himself had almost been retarded. Homosexuality involved a rift with the *opposite*-sex parent. Educational streaming was unhelpful. Smaller classes would improve educational standards. And full employment would reduce the crime problem until teachers trained in Adlerian theory solved it in perpetuity.

More alarming to likely readers of the present volume will be several deviations from Adler's general utopian idealism and political correctness. Adler favours free society's notorious 'division of labour' and the provision of relevant specialist education: he is even content to educate girls differently from boys, in view of girls' forthcoming life-tasks. Monogamy-plus-children is the only marital arrangement worth considering, and wicked old European psychiatrists were wrong to recommend that their patients take lovers. Pre-marital intercourse is discouraged. And 'pampering' is ceaselessly denounced by Adler as yielding later 'whingeing' and 'whining' "neurotics, criminals, drunkards and perverts."

Nevertheless, there are three main propositions of Adler's that are, with qualification, especially consonant with modern understandings and researches.
(1) Individuality. Twin and adoption studies of the 1980's showed people are indeed 'radically individual', as Adler maintained. Only for general intelligence do biological relatives other than identical twins much resemble each other; and unrelated adoptees who grow up together show virtually no psychological similarities at all by adulthood. 50% of eminent people (U.S.Presidents, British Prime Ministers, first-rank world-class philosophers, eminences of English literature, and top British businessmen) turn out to have experienced major horrors in childhood such as serious medical conditions and parental death and bankruptcy, so compensation is as likely as capitulation providing intelligence is adequate. However, to rule out the imposed environment and to admit only a limited role for inheritance on personality is not to rule out genes. Indeed, genes -- in particular, 'gene packages' and the multiplier effects between different genes that cannot be simply passed on to children because genes segregate independently -- now come into their own as a way of explaining otherwise paradoxical human diversity.
(2) The unconscious. Adler's view of the unconscious was non-mysterious and non-dynamic. The unconscious-to-conscious relation is as "photo-to- negative": by just one lie to oneself, the unconscious can realize the master plan arrived at by consciousness. ('I have been rejected'; 'I am really superior'; or 'I have an excuse'.) Once such simple re-drafts of the story (or 'document') of one's life occur (cf. Margaret Donaldson, 1992), the 'lifestyle' derived from the 'guiding fiction' takes over whether one is awake or asleep. In dreams, the Adlerian unconscious can sometimes be caught engaged in the very same problem-solving work as goes on in daily life, yet without the constraints of reality. This view of dreams as a continuation of daytime speculations, anxieties and re-organising of accounts is more plausible than Freud's view that dreams provide disguised fulfilment of forbidden wishes.
(3) Competition and co-operation. At least by 1918, when he added the concept of 'social interest' (altruism) to his first personality process of 'personal interest' (egoism), Adler was arguably on the right track. Despite having lost both Adler and Jung over 'the doctrine of sexuality', Freud himself, by 1922, came to the view that eros was not in fact enough, even when id was considered in harness with superego. Belatedly, room had to be made for thanatos, the omnipresent death-wish that would help explain masochism, the horrors and hysterias of war, the mind's 'repetition compulsion' to dwell on painful stimulation and memories, and perhaps the aggressive elimination of pain and competitors.

Was Adler right? Well, in making personal interest and social interest not opposed to, but independent of each other, he can certainly be said to have anticipated the relations obtaining between today's 'Big' personality dimensions of 'Independence' (will, disagreeableness) and 'Tender- mindedness' (affection, and 'g'-free openness) (Brand, Egan & Deary, 1993). However, Adler's more lasting contribution to psychology will prove to have been in insisting on radical individuality, in some ontogenetic stories that merit careful testing, and in his addressing aspects of human personality that Freud gloomly packaged as thanatos and then left in an eerie limbo. Adler granted others the possibility of what he might without immodesty have observed in himself: will, achievement-striving, a strong sense of responsibility, assertiveness, self-help and 'personal interest' alongside soul, sympathy, tender-mindedness, idealism and 'social interest'. If they can grasp the importance of genes and 'g', Adlerians might still help face down the crudely determinist -- mainly environmentalist -- psychologies of the past.

Much Food for Thought!
By D. V. Palmer
UNDERSTANDING HUMAN NATURE
By Alfred Adler (Translated by W. B. Wolf).

The author, Alfred Adler, died a decade after the volume under review was published (1927). Like Sigmund Freud with whom he spent nearly ten years interacting, he came from a Jewish background. His father was a successful Viennese merchant whose cheerfulness and confidence were greatly admired by the young Alfred. Mr. Adler influenced his children mainly through encouraging words and deeds. Mrs. Adler on the other hand was not anything like her husband in optimism, and enthusiasm, but seemed to have displayed the very complex of inferiority that her son later popularized.

Alfred's childhood was marked by several, what could be termed, traumatic experiences in that, barely three years, he woke up to find a brother lifeless - one with whom he had shared the same bed. Pneumonia and Ricketts were two diseases which threatened his life from within, while two street accidents made the same bid from without. After a somewhat turbulent time in school, he blossomed into a fine student, taking his medical degree in 1895 at the age of 25. Two years later he married Miss Raissa Eptstein, a Russian, who was to greatly influence his view of complementarian marriage. After a general practice in medicine, he began to develop a lasting interest in the study of psychiatry. His work with children after World War I, was to eventually shape his views on personality, which are expressed in his Theory of Individual Psychology.

Understanding Human Nature is an attempt by Adler to familiarize the public at large with his theory of Individual Psychology - at lease with the elements of it. In the preface he outlines his objective thus:

The purpose of the book is to point out how the mistaken behaviour of the individual affects
The harmony of our social and communal life; further, to teach the individual to recognize
his own mistakes, and finally, to show him how he may effect a harmonious adjustment to the
communal life. Mistakes in business or in science are costly and deplorable, but mistakes in the
conduct of life are usually dangerous to life itself. To the task of illuminating man's progress
toward a better understanding of human nature, this book is dedicated.

The book gives a broad overview of human conduct, grappling with such issues as the inner principle of life, the relationship of this principle to community life, the influences of childhood on later life, and the motive and function of mental processes, such as perception and imagination. It also discusses, in the second section - the traits, expressions, and perversions of personality,
with the final chapter focusing on certain specialized emotional manifestations. The implications of the author's observations for education are briefly set out in the appendix. The magnitude of the task of really understanding human nature does not go unnoticed by Adler. But though there are pitfalls in attempting to write such a book, he feels the benefits far outweigh the risks in undertaking such an ambitious project.

The chief benefit of understanding human nature, according to our author, would not only be an increased awareness of ourselves, but a life of harmony with our fellowmen. He states quite optimistically, "Human beings would live together more easily if their knowledge of human nature were more satisfactory," and again on another page, "Human beings would doubtless get along with each other better, and would approach each other more closely, were they able to understand one another better."

But if the pursuit of this knowledge is so important, why is it that not much progress has been made in this area? Adler feels that our isolated life style has greatly militated against such treasure hunt. His journey on the road to better self-awareness begins with a discussion on "soul" - the psychic life. His concept of this principles is limited to organisms that move, presumably, such as insects, animals and man, because "those organisms which are strongly rooted have no necessity for a soul". Though the soul is inherited, it is not transmitted whole, but passes through a stage of evolution. The function is then delineated in terms of its self-preserving role in the individual.

His thesis of Individual Psychology as it relates to the soul is that every expression of the psychic life is directed toward a particular objective. If the goal of an individual can be ascertained by, say, therapies, he would have gone a long way in helping such an individual on the way to wholeness. Because of the centrality of the soul in Adler's understanding of life, he indulges in a thorough discussion of its role in social intercourse, and childhood, having been convinced (like others before him) that the dynamics of the latter overly influence the stages of adulthood.

One senses the author's strength in his discussion of early childhood phenomena. He was well informed by his own childhood experience, and experiments with children later in life. He is convinced that "the basis of educatability lies in the striving of the child to compensate for his weaknesses. A thousand talents and capabilities arise from the stimulus of inadequacy". This "inadequacy" theme is interestingly developed in chapter 5 entitled "The Feeling of Inferiority and the Striving for Recognition."

What can be said of Adler's human and life view as seen through the lenses of his Individual Psychology? First some general impressions. The reader will have a sense of excitement from the very outset, because the author's preface promises much. Because of this, s/he will likely accompany the writer on his climb to self awareness - yearning, hoping, and praying that the trek uphill would contribute even in some small measure to his/her own self-understanding.

One big plus of this book is its clarity of thought and wealth of theoretical and practical insights (with the former outweighing the latter). Maybe the credit for the book's clear expressions should be shared, no doubt, with the translator. These two points are supported and illustrated by Adler's consistent attempt to define certain key terms. For instance: "What we call a character trait is the appearance of some specific mode of expression on the part of an individual who is attempting to adjust himself to the world in which he lives".

On the debit side, the work is marred at times by over generalisation, (such as "people who bite their nails are necessarily stubborn"; and scientific inaccuracies like "There is evidence to prove that it (Male dominance) occurred chiefly as a result of constant battles between primitive people, during the course of which man assumed the more prominent role as warrior, and finally used his newly won superiority in order to retain the leadership for himself...."

Although Adler uses the term "soul" quite often, one gets the impression that it is not used necessarily in the "Christian" sense (though his idea of soul as "life principle" is scriptural) or an entity distinct from the body. Soul to him is simply a function of the body. Of course, this whole point is debatable, and Adler, though baptized a protestant at age 34, should not be faulted here. Though the work is significantly dated, I was not only challenged but informed by it. A final critique; his view that knowledge of human nature would automatically lead to the better life is naive at best. Scripture and experience seem to strongly challenge such assumption. Here I think Adler's optimism lacks realism.

Very Good, yet somehow unsatisfying
By A Person
Adler is an excellent writer, and his simple language and the clarity of his thoughts make this a great read, but his advice and theories leave me with a bit of a hole. It seems that he too often illustrates all the negative aspects of certain types of human behaviour stemming from various childhood experiences without offering any type of solution to the problems. He might throw in a short paragraph of advice at the end of a passage but overall it is a negative message he seems to be sending out. With his thinking, it seems like any above-average human like an actor or a musician is not a gifted person, but someone who wasn't given enough attention when they were young and is now overcompensating for this. That is a very pessimistic outlook and I don't neccesarily think we can simplify it like that. All of this intellectual and scientific thinking only belittles the human spirit and drive and makes it seem like we are machines rather than souls. Overall, though this is a fine book, but dont look for any solutions of how to be a great social person, read it if you want to understand what kind of a person you don't want to be.

Laugh out loud funny
By judy508
This book is laugh out loud funny- as outrageous as it is tender- lovable characters and difficult to put down. Why can't American romance novels be this good? No one trying to cool- normal (well not quite normal) middle class folks trying to find a little love.

If you loved Bridgit Jones you are going to love Cat (Catriona) ...
By sarah hardy
If you loved Bridgit Jones you are going to love Cat (Catriona) Buchanan.

Being a single mum and not having much luck in her love life, Cat decides to kill two birds with one stone. Her column in a Scottish paper isn't getting the readers it once did and after being ambushed into reading The Rules of Engagement by a work colleague, Cat decides to take on the challenges in the book to find herself a man and to also write about her experiences in her column to hopefully bump the figures up.

I Followed the Rules is such a light hearted and uplifting read. I loved the storyline and there is a great mixture of characters.

Grace, Cat's daughter is adorable and I love Cat's interfering sister Helen. Cat herself is a great character and comes across as being a lot of fun, would certainly love to have her come along on a girls night out.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out what is going to happen in the story and that's what I love about chick lit books, they are so easy reading so that you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the story for what it is.

As with any love life things never go to plan even if you are following instructions! Luckily being married myself I won't be attempting the rules in The Rules of Engagement any time soon.

Many thanks to Quercus Books and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hilarious Laugh-Out-Loud Fun!
By Amber Myers
If you liked Sex and the City and the wit of Gilmore Girls, you need to read I Followed The Rules (And Then I Broke Them) by Joanna Bolouri. It's about Catriona (Cat) and her quest to meet the right man. She's been single for six years and she's...well, she's ready to mingle. But her love life isn't the greatest, and she's becoming frustrated. Then she comes across a book called The Rules of Engagement, written by a dude with "rules" on how to date properly. (One rule? Don't Sleep With Him Right Away.) Cat decides to do whatever the book suggests and it seems to work! She meets Tom, a handsome dentist. But she also feels a pull towards Dylan, who doesn't seem interested in anything serious.

This book made me laugh out loud a number of times. From Cat's wit to her moody cat named Heisenberg, I never felt bored. However, if curse words offend you, this might not be the book for you as the f-word is on nearly every other page. I have a bit of a potty mouth, so it was nothing to me, but I know some people want to faint at such a word being used. Cat is also the mother to an eight-year-old daughter named Grace, and I enjoyed reading their moments together because I have a daughter the same age.

The book moves quickly, and you'll be missing Cat when it's all over. Perhaps every time I hear the f-bomb, I'll think of her.

Learning the Chess Openings: For intermediate levels of play, by Jef Kaan

(Kindle) book description (revised/corrected edition 1.4-9) :
In the 'royal game' of chess, an understanding of all the phases of the game is important, namely, the opening, middle game, and the endgame. While the importance of the opening phase often is overestimated by beginners, at higher levels it can make the difference between a win and a loss.
This book first guides the beginner through the labyrinth of the many different opening variations, recommending only some carefully selected, important openings. The choices for the specific variations starting from 1.4 were made on the basis of deep computer analysis, with minimax (back-solving)
of the resulting opening variations; in those cases where two or more choices would be similar (e.g. drawish), the specific choice was based on practical considerations, sometimes explained in the book (e.g. to avoid a sharp variation). There-after the more advanced, chess 'club' players are shown how to develop a specialized opening set of opening variations, which is called a chess opening 'repertoire'. With such a 'repertoire', the number of options during the opening phase is reduced; and by reducing the time required to study openings, one can allocate more time to the study of other elements in chess, such as tactics (!), positional understanding or the endgame. Several opening choices, found with top computer programs are given. For more advanced players, 1.d4 is added for White as a positional repertoire, the French defense against 1.e4, and some gambits for White. The almost perfect/computer-checked repertoire in this book thus gives an additional and very solid repertoire, thereby acquiring a broader knowledge of opening theory as a whole. Many improvements in modern chess opening theory ('novelties') were found, which vice versa influenced the opening choice again. With a top chess engine and our own opening book we achieved a number one standard ranking end Dec. 2010 on the Internet Chess Club (ICC) and stayed in the top-three there ever-since. It is a pleasant surprise to discover how comprehensively easy it is to read this book in plain simple English
By KrissyG
J.E.F Kaan is a Masters degree physicist and MBA and lives in the Netherlands. He obviously has a very logical and mathematical brain. Thus it is a pleasant surprise to discover how comprehensively easy it is to read this book in plain simple English. It is geared towards beginners and those at intermediate (club) level looking to strengthen their game. There is a taster of advanced strategy, all laid out in an easy to follow format. This wonderful book deserves to have a wider audience and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I would recommend reading it in small chunks at a time, as you need to concentrate to follow the moves and the logic, and this takes pleasurable effort, despite the clean simplicity of the text.

I have played chess for many years, although only for leisure. I have never read a chess book before. My knowledge of chess comes from playing the game with all levels of opponent, some of whom were trained to a high level and knew the advice of having a strong opening move and the importance of controlling the centre of the board. My two uncles, sadly now deceased, were both chess masters, winning many chess trophies and tournaments in Finland and for Finland, together with a clock, and often playing in the communist block where chess is strong, and I soon noticed they would always make the same opening move, with an occasional “crazy” move as a surprise tactic.

Kaan has certainly encouraged me to resume the beautiful game and he recommends using a computer chess program to practice the recommended moves.

Chess is a spatial game and it helps to have good spatial intelligence. Kaan nonetheless helps the reader with a three-dimensional chess board early on in the book to aid the reader’s visualisation of the chess board and the square letters and numbers. When dealing with the Black defence in the early chapters, he helpfully turns the diagrams upside down so it is from the perspective of the reader.

The diagrams of all the moves and the artistic graphics used as illustrations between the chapters are excellent and artistically pleasing. There are black and white photos of various grandmasters, all of which are aspirational. The colour version shows the chessboard in a pleasing brown and yellow rather than stark black and white.

Chapter One deals with the purpose of the book. Chapter Two the Opening Phase and why a good opening is essential to winning a game.

Chapter Three is aimed at Beginners’ Openings, which can be skipped by those who want to go straight to intermediate.

The introductions over, and familiarity with chess notation absorbed, Chapter Three continues with a complete tool kit of Opening Repertoires. Kaan explains why this is important and demonstrates what can go wrong by illustrating typical Patzer (=beginner) moves that lead to disaster by their rashness. Included in this are the Grob, or the Scholar’s Mate. All terms are explained. Kaan takes us through the (for example) Black Italian opening, or the Blackburne Shilling gambit, to name just a few.

Kaan leads us through openings to avoid (as a relative beginner) such as the Giuoco Piano – white moving the bishop to C4, actually a start for sharp attack for the more skilled – the Scotch, the Ponziani, Vienna King’s Gambit, Bishop’s Opening, Centre Games, Alapins, Two Knights, etc, etc. He runs through opening defense moves for Black, explaining the possible pitfalls

Chapter Four deals with the Intermediate Repertoire, for example, the Deferred Schliemann, or the Modern Steinitz Defence. This leads on to the key Ruy Lopez variations, to name but one.

Chapter Five progresses into Gambit Repertoire. These tactical plans include Gring, Scotch , Sicilian, Gruenfeld and King’s Indian, amongst several others.

Chapter Six deals with Positional Repertoire: – strategy. Amongst these are the Dutch, Austrian and Leningrad attacks.

Then follows an Appendix of 34 pages that provides some notes, a glossary of terms, (an Index of Variations in tabular form is available in the paperback version only) and comprehensive index of the contents of the book.

I have no hesitation in endorsing this book.

Fantastic Book on the Opening in Chess -- a Computer-tested Repertoire
By Metaphysician
This is a terrific book for the player looking for a positionally sound opening repertoire. Nothing is wasted -- there is some general, useful advice for playing the opening, and then suggested opening lines with concise commentary and explanation. There are separate sections for the improving player and the more experienced player, as well as a gambit repertoire for players interested in more speculative, riskier openings.

Players of expert strength and masters would benefit from the book as well, because the lines are computer-analyzed: Jef Kaan has played on the Internet Chess Club for many years, using a chess engine as well as his program "Bookbuilder," which does what the name suggests: create an optimal opening book. I myself have played many games against Bookbuilder on the ICC, using a computer account, and we seem evenly matched, despite the fact that my computer is faster and more powerful than his, a result that I attribute to his strong, polished opening book.

In short: if you are serious about learning a sound opening repertoire that will leave you confident in the middlegame, this is the book for you.

Somebody forgot to proofread...
By Lisa
I have only looked at about 20 of these cards so far, but there are so many typos on them that I have put them all back in the box and do not intend to trust my studying to them. For instance, ONE SINGLE CARD (Psychiatry Card 4) spells the drug metoclopramide three different ways. Not only did I see several misspellings, but even drug facts were incorrect. I want the cards to help me learn things I don't know, so if I can't trust them to be correct on what I do know, I would be afraid of what errors I would not even realize were there. Save your money and find a more reliable set of flash cards. These cards are advertised as "Fully revised and updated"...I think maybe they should give it another go.

Maybe good for Step 2/3, but not ideal for Step 1
By slenderson
I just got these for step 1 review because they get an "A" rating in the back of First Aid, but I'm disappointed. They include a number of drugs that I've never heard of before (never covered in my med school pharm class, not mentioned in first aid, not tested by the U-World Q-bank) so I'm doubtful that they will be useful on Step 1. They leave out many other drugs included in First Aid. Also, the main focus of most of the cards is the indications for use, rather than mechanism or toxicity. That may make them useful for step 2, but less so for step 1, which wants you to know MOA and toxicity in detail but generally just wants you to know the disease that they treat (rather than what stage of the disease to use them in, and which drugs provide mortality benefit, etc). As other reviewers have mentioned, they have a lot of type-os, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Many drugs have different pertinent information spread between different cards (toxicity on one, MOA on another) and often the information is contradictory. For instance, two different cards mention Carbemazepine, but the 3 toxicities that they list for it are completely different. This makes studying very frustrating!

In short, I may keep these around for step 2 and 3 study, but I think there are probably more appropriate flashcard sets if you are looking to learn pharmacology for step 1.

Not comprehensive! BEWARE!
By Kane
I got these cards because first aid 2011 graded these cards as A in their recommended book section. If you read the description they gave out then you would get the impression that these cards are "comprehensive" and all that you needed for the boards. WRONG. You absolutely need to supplement these flashcards with another source. I ended up using Lange's pharmacology cards (which was actually comprehensive and not too much for the boards btw).

The content of these flashcards are presented in a very good way. It's clear, concise and clinically oriented. However, there simply isn't enough cards to cover all the drugs. In fact many board relevant drugs of the same class aren't even listed. I would recommend these cards if you have extra time for pharm and have gone through your other cards.

Inside the Nudge Unit: How Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference, by David Halpern

Behavioral scientist Dr. David Halpern heads up the UK government's "Nudge Unit," the world’s first government institution that uses behavioral economics to examine and influence human behavior, to "nudge" us into making better decisions. Seemingly small and subtle solutions have led to huge improvements across tax, healthcare, pensions, employment, crime reduction, energy conservation, and economic growth. Adding a crucial line to a tax reminder brought forward millions in extra revenue; refocusing the questions asked at the job center helped an extra 10% of people go off their benefits and back into work; prompting people to become organ donors while paying for their car tax added an extra 100,000 donors to the register in a single year. Now David Halpern and the Nudge Unit will help you to make better choices and improve your life. The Nudge Unit has attracted widespread media and public interest—large pieces have run in the New York Times and Economist; and it's been subject to case studies and reviews by the Harvard Business School and Goldman Sachs.

Buy this Book! Way more than the name would suggest.
By Reisechica
I'm a bit sad to see that this book hasn't caught on like wildfire. It's been a game changer for my team. We are reading it together and seeking to take its lessons to apply specifically to our sphere (retention of students in higher ed, as it happens). It's a bit wonky at the start but gets into so many practical, head-slapping ideas which spark conversation and ideas. We've made some 'small' changes in how we communicate, when, what it looks like, etc., and we are seeing big results. I am evangelizing this book whenever possible (and have bought up a number of the paperback copies) but not seeing it take off. The name is perhaps off-putting, and maybe there are some 'nudge' messages about marketing of books in all of that. From my perspective and that of my team, this book is really helping us frame how we conduct our business.

The best Behavioral Economics book, Doctoral student certified, anyone can read and understand.
By Jacob C. Decker
Spring for the hard cover. Mine is all dog eared, highlighted, and has notes in the margins. Inside the Nudge Unit is much more about practical application and comes from the experience of government policy shifts. This book is less about economics from a philosophical stand point. The book would probably flow faster if I wasn't marking something on almost every page for reference later. This is not a book telling you about the foundations of economics (read Misbehaving). This book tells you what a department in the British government actually did, how they implemented it, what worked and didn't work, what they proved would be successful but weren't able to implement through the bureaucracy, and their thoughts and goals for the future. This book does a nice job sourcing the main take-a-ways of research papers and experiments without bogging things down in academic fluff. If you want something more technical then you're probably already able to access research journals. This book is meant to me more accessible. I've cited this book in my doctoral assignments many times and it's only been out 3 months. Other Books on the same topic: Misbehaving is a faster more humorous read, and full of great historical/philosophical information as well. Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics (Both are much better than Nudge which started the whole thing and was a best selling book of the year for many people) Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness

Somewhat involved description of the people and events that brought "nudging" into a prominent position with the British government. The examples of "nudging" and the effects of these efforts are quite interesting. Similar to the content of Nudge, by Thaler and Sunstein, this book does not substantially clarify what a nudge is. Readers interested in getting a functional understanding of nudges and nudging should keep looking.

From Publishers Weekly
Pianist Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982), apart from being a world-renowned performer for more than 65 years, also wrote a bestselling autobiography, My Young Years. Sachs, author of an admired study of Toscanini, is therefore up against formidable competition?and comes out of it with great credit. His study is detailed, fair-minded and vivid. Rubinstein was vastly egocentric in his private life, yet appeared genuinely transformed by his music-making, which seemed often to come across better on recordings than in person and helped make him the bestselling classical pianist ever. A tireless womanizer, he was middle-aged before he married a woman 22 years his junior and had children. In the last decade of his life, he began a liaison with a young English concert promoter, Annabelle Whitestone (now married to British publisher Sir George Weidenfeld). Rubinstein seems never to have overcome his sad childhood, but the pleasure he gave and continues to give to millions was his true legacy. The book includes an outstanding review, by the author, of Rubinstein's recordings and a fine discography by Donald Manildi. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
For decades people who were fortunate enough to see and hear esteemed pianist Artur Rubinstein (1887-1982) perform left concert halls spellbound. Rubinstein went for the soul of the audience as he wrapped his soaring and spirited playing around each listener. His magnificent interpretation of Chopin remains without equal. Biographer and music historian Sachs (Toscanini, LJ 11/1/78; Music in Fascist Italy, Norton, 1988. o.p.) first heard Rubinstein play in 1959, but it was not until 1986 that he seriously considered writing a biography of Rubinstein. Not having primary source material from the musician's first 53 years was an obstacle (Rubenstein's papers were destroyed or lost when the Germans occupied his house during the war), but Sachs had the full cooperation of Rubinstein's wife, Nela, and access to a huge amount of source material that had accumulated after the Rubinsteins came to the United States. Since in his memoirs (My Young Years, LJ 2/15/73. o.p., and My Many Years, LJ 1/15/80. o.p.) Rubinstein occasionally changed some dates and facts, Sachs realized an added necessity of thoroughness in his research. The resultant biography is definitive and belongs on the shelf alongside those memoirs. Recommended for music collections in both public and academic libraries.

From Booklist
Sachs' biography of Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) reveals him as generous, philandering, insecure, always seeking adoration, and the quintessential interpreter of nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century piano music. Born to Jewish parents in Lodz, Poland, Rubinstein was "abandoned" by them at 12, when he was sent to Berlin to study. He quit that five years later to embark on a world-wide career. Never a technician, Rubinstein concentrated on the emotion expressed by the music he played. He gained energy from being with other people, telling stories, playing music, and sight-seeing. Later, he coached younger pianists and promoted the careers of many. Although Sachs includes critical reviews of Rubinstein's recordings and a discography, he concentrates on Rubinstein's love affairs and relations with his family and friends, pointing out where the facts differ from Rubinstein's memoirs and arguably detracting some from his well-written biography's intimate exploration of Rubinstein, the man behind the music. Definitive...
By Hank Drake
Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was a complicated man. His two-volume autobiography was an interesting read, but only revealed the portions of the pianist's life which he wanted known, was filled with numerous omissions and errors, contained a great deal of petty score settling (his comments about Heifetz, Schnabel and Horowitz were especially cutting), and remarkably little discussion of music.
Harvey Sachs, whose acclaimed biography of Arturo Toscanini is required reading for all musicians, has produced a meticulously researched and balanced look at the pianist's life and music.
As Sachs recounts Rubinstein's unusual childhood and early musical progress, it's clear that the pianist's early years (he left his parents before adolescence) set a pattern of devotion and abandonment which would scar his entire life.
Rubinstein had difficult relations with his entire family, particularly his wife and children. His eldest son had no communication with his father from 1969 onward, and in 1976, at the age of 89, Rubinstein left Nela, his wife of 44 years, for a woman young enough to be his granddaughter. In a sense, Rubinstein considered his adoring public to be his family, and when his biological family was not equally adoring, the pianist's reaction could be volcanic (he once loudly castigated his son, Paul--who was ill--for dozing in the green room during one of his concerts). The book reveals a man who was fundamentally generous (in 1960, he gave a series of ten recitals entirely for charity), but highly insecure, obsessed with position, and always needing to be at the center of attention-onstage or off.
Sachs has reconciled the frequent errors in Rubinstein's memoirs with regard to names, dates, and events. He also interviewed nearly everyone still alive who knew Rubinstein. The tangled story of Rubinstein's affair with Annabelle Whitestone, which lasted until his death, is handled with fairness and sympathy toward all parties.
Musicians and Rubinstein fans will find Donald Manildi's discography very useful-especially as the complete Rubinstein recordings have now been reissued by RCA. Sachs is a knowledgeable musician, but he occasionally lets his biases creep into his appraisal of Rubinstein's recorded legacy. He is notably critical of Rubinstein's Beethoven on several fronts, but the gist of his complaints is that the pianist didn't play it the way Toscanini conducted it. For the most part, however, Sachs' comments on Rubinstein's recordings are noted for their fairness, clarity, and objectivity.
On the whole, Harvey Sachs has done an excellent job of recounting Rubinstein's long and eventful life. As with his biography of Toscanini, this book should be read by anyone who loves great music or has ever bought a Rubinstein recording.

Rubinstein: A Life - not reccomended
By Patrick de Ridder (Pays Bas)
"Rubenstein: A Life", in my view, is a dreary, boring, and unimaginative summing up of little facts concerning the life of Rubinstein and those around him.

Brilliant on Rubinstein's connection with Brazil and Villa-
By A Customer
I would like to contact the author, as am presently effecting a research on Villa-Lobos, and not-at this stage- write a review. I believe there are a few minor mistakes with respect to brazilian personalities (eg the brazilian pianist Antonieta Rudge had no connection whatsoever with Pound's friend, the american violinist Olga Rudge) , and precisions with respect to dates, programs of Rubinstein's concerts in the 1920s, which I believe could be of interest to the author. I found the book fascinating, and would very much benefit from the possibility of discussing some points with the author.
