It can be tough at the top...

Lies, deceit, treachery, poison, knives in the night, justified paranoia, guilt, revenge... it is all there, and more, in this classic story of how the lust for power can literally drive people crazy. It can also kill them. I first read this play of William Shakespeare as a high school reading assignment, the way the vast majority of people do. Lo’ these many years later, I’ve undertaken a project of re-reading a lot of those H.S. reading assignments, including the plays of Shakespeare, in part to determine how much I missed the first time around, which, in two short words is normally: a lot.

The play is set in Scotland. The king is Duncan. His not faithful lord, called “thane” in Scotland at the time, is Macbeth. And he has a wife who has become a symbol of all wives who relentlessly push their husbands to be “successful,” and who is normally addressed with the misnomer of “Lady.” (“That’s no lady, that’s my wife”...but I digress). As Cliff Notes will tell you, Duncan is murdered in his sleep, with those proverbial “long knives.” Macbeth skillfully diverts the blame to his body guards, who are conveniently also killed (a death man tells no tales) while also casting suspicion on Duncan’s sons, who have fled for their lives to further shores. How many times, throughout all the cultures and civilizations of the world, has this scenario basically unfolded?

Throughout many of his plays Shakespeare utilizes elements from the ancient Greek plays, such as prophecy and a “chorus” that predicts future events, often esoterically. In this play, Shakespeare uses three witches around a cauldron, stirring, and if there is one line that most people remember from the play, it is the first line of their chorus: “Double, double, toil and trouble.”

A fellow Amazon reviewer noted a quip that Shakespeare’s plays are simply quotes strung together, a humorous way of noting that many portions of the play have entered the popular, albeit intellectual portion, of our culture. For example, after the first Iraq War (yeah, I know, it is hard to say which one was the first one now), the cover to the “The Economist” featured the line: “When the hurlyburly’s done.” My first high school reading failed me, and I had no idea this was a reference to a line in Macbeth’s opening scene, with the second line being: “When the battle’s lost and won.” And is that battle lost or won? Proving the enduring relevance of Shakespeare in so many settings, later in the same scene he writes: “Her husband’s to Aleppo gone, master o’ the Tiger.” I haven’t seen “The Economist” use that line to refer to its British citizens going to fight for ISIS.

Another quote that I remembered, and life experience has proven to be so true: “Sleep that knits up the ravel’d sleeve of care.” Hum. Another quote that life experience proves true: “Lechery, sir, it provokes and unprovokes: it provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance. Therefore much drink may be said to be an equivocator with lechery: it makes him, and it mars him... makes him stand to and not stand to...” Finally, so that I literally don’t quote the entire play, another classic scene that personally resonated, due to my travels, was Lady Macbeth’s efforts to wash the blood off her hands, and she proclaims: “All the perfume of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.”

Another excellent, still so relevant play of Shakespeare, that needs to read more than twice. 5-stars, plus.

Excellent edition for teaching R and J in middle school.

My favorite inexpensive version for teaching my middle school students. I use the text and buy a few No Fear editions but I don't share those until I've taught kids how to unpack the language with scanning and paraphrasing. If I wait for awhile, almost all of my students can decode the R and J in the original language. Great edition. Highly recommended.

Great edition for academic purposes

I used this edition for several essays - I'd have to say it's the most helpful edition I've come across when it comes to academic work. The footnotes are helpful without being too distracting, and there are a series of critical essays in the back that hit on the biggest themes and controversies within the play.

If you have to write an essay on the play, I would definitely recommend this edition. You'll have great sources already built into the book, cutting your research time in half.

About the Author
George M. Marakas is an associate professor of Information Systems at the School of Business at the University of Kansas. His teaching expertise includes Systems Analysis and Design, Technology-Assisted Decision Making, Electronic Commerce, Management of IS Resources, Behavioral IS Research Methods, and Data Visualization and Decision Support. In addition, George is an active researcher in the area of Systems Analysis Methods, Data Mining and Visualization, Creativity Enhancement, Conceptual Data Modeling, and Computer Self-Efficacy. George received his PhD in Information Systems from Florida International University in Miami and his MBA from Colorado State University. Throughout his academic career, George has distinguished himself both through his research and in the classroom. He has received numerous national teaching awards and his research has appeared in the top journals in his field. In addition to this text, he is also the author of three best-selling textbooks in information systems: Decision Support Systems for the 21st Century, Systems Analysis and Design: An Active Approach, and Data Warehousing, Mining, and Visualization: Core Concepts.

About the Author
Myer Kutz has headed his own firm, Myer Kutz Associates, Inc., since 1990. For the past several years, he has focused on writing and on developing engineering handbooks on a wide range of technical topics, such as mechanical, materials, biomedical, transportation, and environmentally conscious engineering, for a number of publishers, including Wiley, McGraw-Hill, and Elsevier. Earlier, his firm supplied consulting services to a large client roster, including Fortune 500 companies, scientific societies, and large and small publishers. The firm published two major multi-client studies, “The Changing Landscape for College Publishing” and “The Developing Worlds of Personalized Information.” Before starting his independent consultancy, Kutz held a number of positions at Wiley, including acquisitions editor, director of electronic publishing, and vice president for scientific and technical publishing. He has been a trustee of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and chaired committees of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Association of American Publishers. He holds engineering degrees from MIT and RPI, served as an officer in the US Army Ordnance Corp, and worked in the aerospace industry on the Apollo project. In addition to his edited reference works, he is the author of nine books, including Temperature Control, published by Wiley, Rockefeller Power, published by Simon & Schuster, the novel, Midtown North, published under the name Mike Curtis, and most recently the independently published novel, In the Grip. He is the editor of the Bulletin of the Professional Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers and writes The Scholarly Publishing Scene column for the magazine Against the Grain. He lives in Delmar, NY, with his wife, Arlene.

A worthwhile resource

If the chapter on recycling written by Adrian Merrington is any indication of the quality of this book, it looks to be a welcome & worthwhile resource written by recognized experts in various fields of plastics. Merrington's encyclopedic chapter not only covers all key technical issues deeply yet concisely, but also integrates honest commentary about the real challenges of recycling. Chapters on bio-based and biodegradable polymers and nanocomposites are also necessary additions in this volume.

Heartwarming romance

A wonderful story of how a sweet baby brings together two people who previously had wildly different plans for their futures. The heat of a New Orleans summer and living under the same roof pushes them to test out a physical relationship, which both regret almost immediately. Jenny and Jared had been hurt in the past, providing solid reasons for keeping their distance initially. Only through one character’s major shift in thinking do they get to enjoy a happily every after.

Two damaged people find solace in each other

THE BACHELOR'S BABY PROMISE is a contemporary romance set in New Orleans' French Quarter about two badly damaged people.

Jared Montgomery is a geologist or engineer of some sort with a strong wanderlust. At the opening of the book, he is coming home to recuperate from extensive injuries received in an oil well explosion in the Middle East, an explosion that also killed his best friend. He is bringing his friend's illegitimate baby with him to place for adoption so it will have a good home in America. He needs a nanny for the baby in the meantime.

Jenny Stratford, a teacher, grew up an orphan in a children's home, never chosen for adoption and never knowing anything about her parents or other relatives. This experience left her so emotionally scarred that she has no ambitions, no hobbies, no interests of any kind except finding a husband and having babies. Making her situation even worse, she has just dumped her fianc� because he was taking advantage of her: he didn't love her; he only wanted someone to take care of his kids. So when Jenny hears of the nanny job in New Orleans, she takes it.

Although I felt very sorry for Jenny, I never got to like her. When she is with Jared, she nags him almost unceasingly. When she isn't with Jared, she obsessively replays earlier events of the book in her head over and over. She doesn't seem intelligent enough to have a college degree. Her conversational topics are limited and boring. She routinely parks illegally in a pedestrian-only zone (somehow without getting ticketed). Jared's apartment is one of the most expensive and sought-after places to live in the city, yet she never notices its woodwork, quirky layout, high ceilings, or interior courtyard. Our glorious cathedral is steps away, but she never goes in to see it. Ditto for our many art galleries, museums, and interesting restaurants within walking distance. She was blind to everything wonderful around her; she noticed only the baby, Jared, and a neighbor in the building.

Jared I did like. His enthusiasm for seeing the world makes him much more understandable a person than Jenny, and his honor makes him likable. He makes the best of a bad situation without grousing about it or pitying himself.

Under ordinary circumstances, I suspect the two would never be interested in each other. They have little in common and want completely different kinds of lives. But being forced together for weeks on end with an attractive member of the opposite sex makes them fall for each other against their own wishes.

The tension of the story rests in several questions. Will the baby have to grow up without any knowledge of her family as Jenny did? Will Jared's job in the Middle East still be exciting without his best friend to share it with? What will happen to Jared and Jenny's relationship when each returns to her/his job?

Different viewpoints believable and worth cheering about

What I found interesting in this book was that three people had very disparate goals (and, yes, I'm including the adorable baby Jamie) and that I found each viewpoint believable and worth cheering on. Which means that I was hoping the three would find common ground but having no faith that it could happen. Like the New Orleans setting, the book simmered with tension. I thought Mrs. Giraux a terrific foil for the situation with Jared and Jenny and a wonderful character, too. I'd recommend the book for those who like romance that deals with the push/pull issues of adventuring in exotic locations versus establishing roots and family in a small town.

Very good introduction to SketchUp

This is a very good book, written by someone who really understands the SketchUp arena. The book has an introduction to modeling in Sketchup, an insightful description of rendering options, and an introduction to programming in Ruby. For me, the book could use greater emphasis on modeling and Ruby, as some of the subtleties of rendering are not matched by the depth of modeling descriptions. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, found it to be extremely helpful, and read it in its entirety.
