No Super Heroes Need Apply

Not a fan of cardboard cutout protagonists like I was when I was younger. Something about having flaws gives depth and humanity. Or as they say dark brings out the color. Mick Herron writes like the world as it is to more mature eyes-grimy,gritty and profoundly human. Real life with a dash of tabasco for aficionados of a le Carre with a sense of humor.

Slow Horses finish first in the end

The title points to the most important element of the novel -- the characters exiled to Slough House. Taken from active duty for a variety of reasons that range from performance to politically motivated ass-covering to nuisance relocation, the people who report for work at Slough House under the eagle-eye of Jackson Lamb are the skeleton of the story the plot is hung upon.
The synopsis provided by Publishers Weekly adequately outlines the plot of Slow Horses, and too much more would spoiler some parts of the novel that are best discovered slowly. While River Cartwright may be the first major character introduced, the story is as much about his fellow exiles finding new life and mission, and may ultimately be mostly about the canny, overweight, determined head of Slough House, Jackson Lamb.
I look forward to reading future novels by Mick Herron. I get the feeling that he's still working on the perfect balance of plot/character/action. He's very close to perfect with Slow Horses.

Terrific start to an espionage series with comic flair

If you were so tired coming home from work on London's Tube that you left behind a work folder, that could be bad, but probably not a disaster, right? If that folder is red, and marked "top secret," however, then yes, it is a disaster. Min Harper's promising career as an MI5 agent came to a screeching halt when his left-behind folder was turned over to the media and made the agency a laughingstock.
Min is relegated to work at Slough House, with the other "slow horses," as they're called by their former colleagues at Regent's Park. His new office-mates include River Cartwright, who was blamed (very possibly wrongly) for screwing up a suicide bomber drill in a way that would have resulted in an estimated 120 deaths if the situation had been real. Other slow horses include recovering alcoholic Catherine Standish and computer maven Roderick Ho.
Slow horses are doomed to crushingly boring tasks, performed under the always derisive direction of boss Jackson Lamb. Lamb is a smelly, coarse slob, but he knows his stuff. Combine that with the blinding ambition of the Slow Horses to prove they deserve to be reinstated to Regent's Park, and you've got a recipe for a thriller. Season it with satire, provided by Mick Herron's gimlet-eyed view of the modern intelligence state and its guardians at MI5, and this is a very tasty dish.
The storyline is driven by the kidnapping of a young man and the threat posted on a BBC blog that in 48 hours he's going to have his head cut off live on the internet. The plot is just complex enough, the characters are unforgettable and the dialog is snappy.
Great fun on the page and excellent on audio. Don't miss this one, or its successor, Dead Lions.
