I was slightly disappointed since the book was advertised as an all-new adventure

For anyone that has read the collection of short stories in Doctor Who: Time Trips, this particular adventure will be very familiar. It is simply one of those stories expanded into a novel. While the story line, itself, is fast paced and upbeat, I was slightly disappointed since the book was advertised as an all-new adventure, which it was not. For those that enjoy an abbreviated form, the one in Time Trips is more than sufficient. For those that like a little more detail, the book would be the way to go.

A hit for fans of Doctor Who

I'm a relatively new convert to the Doctor Who fandom, but ever since the first episode I watched (Rose) I've been hooked. I can't really say I have a favorite Doctor, because I think they each bring something unique and special to the role. Doctor Who: The Drosten's Curse centers around the 4th Doctor, who I am not familiar with as I have not yet gone back and watched the older episodes. Although each actor plays the role a bit differently, the essence of the Doctor is always the same. The author nailed his personality, which involves a mixture of compassion, courage, intelligence, and an air of superiority.

And where would the Doctor be without his companions? In this story he befriends a young receptionist named Bryony Mailer, who is fed up with her job and dreams of bigger and better things. He also meets Mr. Patterson, or Putta, who is not exactly a normal man. What he is, however, is very cowardly and awkward, and he just so happens to have a huge crush on Bryony. Bryony is just about as different from him as can be; she is very driven, confident, and courageous. I admired her, but found myself frequently annoyed by Putta, at least for the first half of the book. While Bryony remained strong in the face of danger, Putta had to work hard to overcome his timid nature and I did find some respect for him by the end. The Doctor, of course, was his usual genius self, which often came off as condescending or rude, but I guess hundreds of years of experience make it hard to deal with foolishness and stupidity.

The foe the Doctor and his companions come up against is ancient and powerful. You know it's going to be a wild ride when the Doctor is very obviously afraid of the creature and its powers. Even with its psychic abilities, it isn't one of the most interesting alien species the Doctor has ever come across (in my book anyway). He definitely has to depend heavily on his friends in order to find a solution, but that's not a rare thing in the Doctor Who universe. Even with all of his wisdom, his companions often play a big part in saving the day.

Doctor Who: The Drosten's Curse was the first Doctor Who novel I've ever read, but I don't think it will be my last. Author A.L. Kennedy is an obvious fan of the show and she definitely was able to accurately capture the Doctor's personality. I could see the whole story play out in my head as I was reading and it was easy to pretend it was an actual episode of the show. If you are a Doctor Who fan, even if you aren't familiar with the older incarnations of the Doctor, check this book out.

A mixed bag of a story in the Doctor Who world

On Arbroath, something strange is going on. Golfers are disappearing, people are hearing other people’s thoughts and then there is the strange grandchildren of the equally weird Mrs. Fetch, who owns the local hotel. Whatever is going on here, the Doctor will figure it out, with the help of the hotel junior receptionist, Bryony. But something alien and ancient is awakening and it is up to the Doctor to find a way to stop it before it is too late. .
I love the new version of Doctor Who and with this installment, we get to take an adventure with the Fourth Doctor, who was played by Tom Baker on the show and I got to admit, it was a fun yet confusing story to read. THE DROSTEN’S CURSE is my first foray into the older (now classic) doctors and I got to admit the author did a bang up job in capturing the Doctor’s personality within the pages. This doctor has some levels of psychotic wonder and awe in his travels and the author does a great job in capturing that as well as his emotions within the story. As I haven’t read any of the classic Doctor Who stories with the older Doctors, this was a slight departure for me. The story is at times creepy and suspenseful yet you can’t help but wonder when the Doctor will figure it all out. It had a nice suspense filled emotion going through the whole book, especially when you have portions where you were going ‘WHAT?’ in that scared high pitch voice. This would have been even better if it was a dark and stormy night, in my opinion, just to up the creepy factor a bit.

The downside I found with this latest book in the Doctor Whology is the pacing at times went from manically fast to slower than a turtle. There was no happy medium and I got a sense of the author trying to fit a lot of things in the story as they could while keeping true to the world that is Doctor Who. There are a lot of details within THE DROSTEN’S CURSE, so many that the story gets lost at times within details we didn’t need to know and there are a lot of characters here, so many it felt like I needed a scorecard to keep track of them all. All those characters and details kept cluttering up the story at times and took me out of the story, which was not what I enjoy when I read a new book.

THE DROSTEN’S CURSE is a hit or a miss for me. I loved it had captured the essence of the fourth Doctor yet the story itself kept bouncing all over the place. As much as I wanted to rate this book higher, I just couldn’t due to the mixed bag of story pacing that went from one extreme to another to way more characters than needed. If you enjoy classic Doctor Who then you might enjoy a trip with the fourth Doctor. Unfortunately for me, THE DROSTEN’S CURSE wasn’t a grand adventure as I would have liked.

About the Author
Sharon Badal is a Short Film Programmer for the Tribeca Film Festival, screening over 1,500 submissions annually without losing her mind. She has been with the festival since its inception, and has produced special projects for various Tribeca entities since 1999, including the 2005 Sloan Film Summit for the Tribeca Film Institute. Sharon is a faculty member at New York University's renowned Tisch School of the Arts in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, teaching undergraduate courses in what she refers to as "the beginning and the end” of the filmmaking process - Producing Essentials and Film Distribution & Marketing. In addition, Sharon team-teaches The Business of Producing for NYU's prestigious Stern School of Business. As the self-proclaimed "empress of short film,” Sharon has served on the regional jury for the 2005 Student Academy Awards, and on the juries for the 2006 Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and the 2007 Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto. For the past four years, Sharon has dedicated much of her free time to working for The Leary Firefighters Foundation, founded by actor Denis Leary. In 2007, she worked primarily on the Foundation's New Orleans Firehouse Restoration Project as well as on its annual fundraiser, The Bash for New York's Bravest. From her humble beginnings at age fourteen as an usher in her father's movie theatre, Sharon went on to hold executive positions in distribution for United Artists/MGM, Warner Brothers and Orion Pictures, and has worked on many live events, including projects for Walt Disney Feature Animation, ShowEast, Cinema Expo International, and the Independent Feature Film Market. She received her B.F.A. in film and television production and her M.A. in cinema studies and business, both from New York University. She loves Coney Island, searching for alien life, and chocolate in any form. Sharon lives in New York City, and there's no place else she'd rather be.

Great Advice By The People Who Know!

"Swimming Upstream" gives such great insight into the world of short films, I feel like I now can navigate my own path to any festival and/or any distributor- granted they like my content. The book is comprised of essays, and some bulleted lists, of tips and helpful advice for first-time short filmmakers wanting to get their beloved masterpieces watched by a wider audience than just grandma down in Florida. The essays have been crafted by the industry professionals themselves, so they're not dry and structured to fit a certain curriculum. This guide book was a joy to read, and I'm so glad that I have its expertise and knowledge as my foundation as I move into submitting my baby into the festival circuit to hopefully see it flourish in its natural environment.

This is your all-access festival pass

For less than the price of a single festival entry fee, you can buy "Swimming Upstream: A Lifesaving Guide to Short Film Distribution." The book in itself is like getting invited to a top-tier film festival: watching Q&As with established filmmakers, hearing panel presentation of leading distributors, and, perhaps best all, like sitting down at a breakfast buffet in the hotel where the festival has all the VIPs staying, and you turn to the person next to you a strike up a conversation. And maybe that person is Trevor Groth of Sundance or George Eldred of Aspen Short Fest or the author herself, Sharon Badal, NYU professor and programmer for Tribeca. It doesn't get any more A-List than this.

Even though technology and the world of media seems to be in perpetual flux, Swimming Upstream remains relevant. The book's tone is informative, but informal. Supportive and encouraging, but pragmatic. Short filmmaking has only increased in the years since this book's publication, and the insights from the leaders of the industry are still spot on. This is hard-earned wisdom from the very people who shape the world of short films, people who have devoted their careers to short films, who have been the programmers and distributors of short films for the past several years and, no doubt, will be the decision makers watching your film. Before you apply to any festival, read this book first.

A Must Read For Short Filmmakers!

How great is this book!
My copy has blue post-it notes on practically every chapter.
I have been referring to it, as I finally begin to navigate the waters of getting my own short film out there and seen. There are so many gold nuggets in each chapter, specifically the section on marketing, tag-lines & festival strategies. Sharon Badal keeps it personal by adding her own practical "helpful hints" in each category.

She also sheds a bright light into what is sometimes considered the hazy labyrinth of the film festival circuit, by including essays & conversations with the filmmakers, programmers and distributors themselves. These essays & interviews are incredibly insightful, and often very funny--and so make for a terrific read.

I can't wait to use the tools I found in this guide to start my festival strategies. Thank you, Sharon Badal for taking what is often presented as a dry topic, and making it fun and definitely user friendly. An incredible resource.

Friedel traces innovation by innovation the historical development of a whole host of technologies. From cheese -making to supersonic aircraft we learn how certain technologies 'take off' and others lose their way in the shuffle of social events. We see too how time and again key individuals have been responsible for breakthrough developments which move mankind forward.

Friedel is well aware that the development of Western technology is not a one- sided altogether positive story. The weapons of mass - destruction that threaten mankind, and a wide range of threats to the earth itself come in part as result of technological developments.

The March to the Future

Several years ago, the education channel in our town had a show called "Connections" in which the story was told of how common things of the modern world came to be through the most fantastic journey of inventions. This book encompasses just about everything we have today and tells how it all came to be. But, the author goes to the extreme of telling not just aobut the inventors, the tinkerers and the capitalists who profited from them, it tells the intriguing human side of technology and how it impacted the lives of the people who benefited and also suffered because of them. It is a remarkably detailed adventure through the history of how modern people came to be. I found it to be a book I could hardly put down and once I did, I was eager to get back to it. It takes the reader from the first black smiths to the super sonic transport, from the invention of thread and yarn making to the launching of satellites. It is the remarkable story of western civilizations, north of the Mediterranean, west of the Volga, and how they advanced steadily, relentlessly and with ever quickening pace to make the world we know. Do not expect gratuitous recognitions to other cultures or apologies to nature or to overtaken primitive societies. This is a factual, no-holds-barred history of industry and how the European men and women made things that made things happen. It explores ruthlessly the insanely driven mechanics, the dusty masons, the sooty handed artisans who were there at the first laying of the foundation corner stone of western civilization. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out just how it is we arrived here and now.

Culture of Excitement

This book is such a treasure trove . . . A thrilling read of constant discovery.
We live in a complicated world and this amazing piece of scholarship reveals how it came about. Everything we take for granted. How it happened. From the plough to the microchip, I was constantly surprised and excited to discover how things really came to pass. The story of so many individuals' struggles to improve and innovate is inspiring.
This is a big book. When I began I had no idea of what riches it would be reveal. (the eBook version is easier to handle) but every pages offers new insights. A great and absorbing read.

Well organized but woefully outdated

Very well written and organized. But woefully out of date. SonarQube is under heavy development, and not only the UI, but basic principles of the software have changed since this book came out. Seven pillars of QA is now five pillars (a little disconcerting to people worried about quality), and the architecture infrastructure is completely gone. But three stars for some good pointers on core concepts that are still valid.

The divine place for all programmers – the source code – from now on can be visited by non-programmers – QA people, managers, etc. They just need to start using the SonarQube as a tour guide. This book makes a powerful introduction into the code quality and continuous inspection concepts. I used it for two purposes – to learn the underlying subject of the source code inspection and to learn the SonarQube tool itself. I succeeded in both goals. The book should be read together with “hands-on” experimenting with the software and all underlying technologies. I highly recommend this book to all developers, managers, Agile Scrum Masters who is involved in modern Agile-based software development process.

No one grumbles like Bob Bly

Bob Bly has been called America's copywriter and he has written dozens of books on that subject. This is NOT one of them. This is even better. It's a collection of wisdom filled essays about living and life in general. Bly candidly shares a part of himself not usually found in his other publications. Calling himself a "cranky curmudgeon" he lays out a useful philosophy for low stress, high quality living. If you are already a Bly fan your collection is not complete without this book. If you have never heard of Bly, this book would be a great way to get to know him.

Entertaining and potentially useful book marred by production errors and slovenliness

The book is a collection of various bits of advice on salesmanship, marketing, and personal and business wisdom. It is self-published and marred by sloppy design and production errors. The typesetting is poor, done in a word processing program rather than a program designed for books. The inside margins are so small the book is hard to hold open to read. And the resources cited, typically web URLs, are scattered throughout the book rather than provided conveniently in an appendix or resources section or endnotes.

Many dangerous inaccuracies

I was assigned this book for an online pharmacology course connected with a nursing re-entry program. I have found an unacceptable number of errors in this book and believe it can be dangerous for nursing students to use. The publishers should certainly be required to immediately make an erratum available with corrections. I am only about a third of the way through my program and note these errors:

p79 Exercise on sliding scale insulin dosage
**first answer should be TEN units (7+3) (book says 11)
**second answer should be ELEVEN units (7+4 - not 8...)
**p80 example 3 answer should be .66 ml NOT .75

p82 Exercise on drops per minute should say 60gtt PER ML NOT per hour at top of page. Also section is on gtt/min yet the answers are calling for mL/hr...

p261 Q3 answer should be 0.625 NOT 0.75 as noted in answer key.

p 355 paragraph on "fostering health maintenance" lists "high cholesterol foods" as "...fried foods, fatty desserts, and nuts..." While also saying that cholesterol is an animal product and not found in plants.

The book has excellent well written sections which make these errors look like a sloppy lack of editing and quality control.
